Trip Introduction

A loop from Paro across western and central Bhutan, flying out to Bumthang and driving back through Trongsa, Phobjikha, Punakha and Thimphu. Along the way you share a home-cooked lunch in the stone village of Ura, walk the Gangtey Nature Trail, climb to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten and hike to Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Paro – Valley Views, Cultural Highlights & Drive to Thimphu

Morning: Arrive in Paro & First Views of Bhutan

Your 10-day Bhutan highlights tour begins the moment you touch down in the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon. Upon arriving at Paro International Airport, you’ll be greeted by your local guide and driver and begin your journey through Bhutan.

Before heading into town, pause at the Paro Bird’s-Eye Viewpoint, perched just above the runway, for your first sweeping panorama of the valley. Lush terraced fields, traditional farmhouses, and rolling green hills provide a beautiful introduction to Bhutan's distinctive landscape.

Afternoon: Discover Paro's Cultural Heritage

After lunch in Paro, begin your afternoon sightseeing with some of the valley's most important cultural landmarks.

The National Museum (Ta Dzong): Housed in a historic watchtower above Paro Dzong, the museum features an extensive collection of Bhutanese art, cultural artifacts, religious objects, and natural history. Its hilltop location also offers impressive views across the Paro Valley, making it a wonderful introduction to Bhutanese history and heritage before your journey continues to the cultural heartland of Central Bhutan.

Rinpung Dzong: Walk down to the “Fortress of the Heap of Jewels,” one of Bhutan's finest examples of traditional dzong architecture. Its towering whitewashed walls, peaceful courtyards, and intricately painted wooden galleries provide a glimpse into Bhutan's distinctive blend of Buddhist spirituality, government, and daily life. The dzong remains an important administrative and religious center.

Nyamai Zam Footbridge: Just below Rinpung Dzong, cross this traditional wooden cantilever bridge for beautiful views back toward the fortress rising above the river. It is one of Paro's classic photo spots and offers a particularly atmospheric view when the dzong is illuminated after dark.

Evening: Stroll Through Paro Town

As the afternoon winds down, take a leisurely stroll along Paro's main street. Browse local handicraft shops, stop for a drink at a neighborhood café or brewery, or watch residents practicing traditional archery if a match is taking place.

Return to your hotel for dinner and a relaxing evening in Paro, preparing for tomorrow's flight to Bumthang in Central Bhutan.

Day 1 Summary

Altitude: 2,250 m / 7,382 ft

Distance Traveled: ~25 km / 15 miles (local valley transfers & sightseeing)

Time Involved: ~5–6 hours (excluding arrival flight)

Main Sights & Activities: Paro Bird's-Eye Viewpoint, National Museum (Ta Dzong), Rinpung Dzong, Nyamai Zam Footbridge, Paro Main Street Walk

Overnight: Khangkhu Resort (or similar)

Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner

Insider's Pro Tip: Request a window seat on the left side of the plane when flying from Delhi or Paro into Paro for spectacular Himalayan views. On clear days, you may catch glimpses of some of the world's highest peaks, including Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga. Wear comfortable shoes that are easy to remove, as footwear may need to be removed when entering certain temples or sacred interiors.

Day 2: Today to Bumthang-the cultural heart of Bhutan

Morning: Flight to Bumthang

This morning, transfer to Paro Airport for your short but spectacular flight to Central Bhutan and the sacred Bumthang Valley. As you soar over forested ridges and deep valleys, enjoy sweeping Himalayan views before descending into the broad, beautiful Bumthang Valley, the spiritual heartland of the kingdom.

Upon landing, meet your local driver, check into your accommodation, and settle in before beginning your exploration of Bumthang. As one of the highlights of this 10-Day Bhutan Itinerary, Bumthang offers a deeper look into Bhutan's spiritual traditions, ancient temples, and living cultural heritage.

Afternoon: Sacred Temples & Local Artisan Experiences

Your introduction to Central Bhutan begins with some of Bumthang's most revered religious and cultural sites. This transition from Paro to Bumthang marks the beginning of the central Bhutan portion of your Western and Central Bhutan Tour.

Jambay Lhakhang: Built in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo of Tibet, this ancient temple is associated with the legend of the 108 temples built across the Himalayan region to subdue a giant demoness. Jambay Lhakhang remains an important pilgrimage site and is particularly renowned for its annual festival.

Kurjey Lhakhang: Meaning “body imprint,” Kurjey Lhakhang is named for the sacred cave where Guru Rinpoche is believed to have meditated in the 8th century and left his body imprint on the rock. The temple complex is set against a forested mountainside and is one of Bumthang's most revered spiritual sites.

Tamshing (Tamzhing) Monastery: A short walk across a suspension bridge brings you to this important Nyingma monastery, founded in 1501 by the renowned Bhutanese saint Pema Lingpa. The monastery is known for its ancient murals and religious treasures.

Kenchosum Lhakhang: Continue with a short walk to this charming monastery. While the original temple dates back centuries, the present structure was faithfully reconstructed after a fire in 2010, preserving the site's traditional character.

Bumthang Swiss Farm: Visit this long-established local farm to sample products such as Gouda cheese, clover honey, apple brandy, and herbal teas. The experience offers an interesting glimpse into Bumthang's agricultural traditions and the valley's distinctive blend of Bhutanese and Swiss influences.

Traditional Weaving Workshops: Depending on the day's timing, visit a local weaving workshop to watch artisans create handwoven Yathra, Bhutan's distinctive patterned woolen textile. You may also have an opportunity to browse locally made crafts, incense, or woodcarvings.

Evening: Chamkhar Town Stroll & Valley Relaxation

In the late afternoon, enjoy a relaxed stroll through Chamkhar town, the main town of Bumthang. Browse small shops and bakeries, take in the easygoing atmosphere, and experience a quieter side of Bhutan away from the country's better-known western destinations.

Return to your lodge in the evening to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Bumthang Valley.

Day 2 Summary

Altitude: 2,800 m / 9,186 ft

Distance Traveled: ~35 km / 22 miles (local valley transfers; flight distance excluded)

Time Involved: ~6–7 hours (including 35-minute flight & sightseeing)

Main Sights & Activities: Flight to Bumthang, Jambay Lhakhang, Kurjey Lhakhang, Suspension Bridge Walk to Tamshing Monastery, Kenchosum Lhakhang, Swiss Farm Tasting, Chamkhar Town Walk

Overnight: Rinchenling Resort (or similar)

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Insider's Pro Tip: Request a left-side window seat on the domestic flight from Paro to Bumthang for panoramic aerial views of the Himalayan range. At Tamshing Monastery, look for the heavy chain-mail coat traditionally associated with Pema Lingpa. Pilgrims may circumambulate the inner sanctuary wearing it as part of a traditional spiritual practice.

Day 3: Excursion to Ura Valley – Remote Villages & High-Pass Hiking

Morning: Scenic Drive & Optional Mountain Pass Hike

Embark on a captivating day trip deeper into Central Bhutan to explore the high-altitude Ura Valley. Traditionally regarded as one of Bhutan's earliest settled areas, this tranquil valley is less visited than the country's western destinations, offering a fascinating glimpse into rural Bhutanese life.

The scenic drive from Jakar takes approximately two hours, climbing through forested mountain landscapes toward Serthangla Pass. Along the way, enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding valleys and, on clear days, snow-capped Himalayan peaks.

Upon reaching the pass, choose between two ways to continue:

Optional Downhill Hike: Begin a peaceful one-hour walk from the pass. The trail winds through alpine-like vegetation, seasonal wildflowers, and open pastures where cattle and horses graze before descending toward a broad, serene valley framed by traditional stone farmhouses. The hike is optional and can be skipped in favor of the vehicle transfer.

Scenic Vehicle Transfer: If you prefer not to hike, remain in the comfortable private vehicle with your driver and enjoy the mountain scenery as the road winds down toward Ura village.

Afternoon: Village Immersion, Temple Visit & Home-Cooked Lunch

Reunite with the group in Ura village for an intimate cultural experience and a closer look at traditional life in one of Bhutan's most distinctive rural communities.

Ura Lhakhang & Community Kitchen: Visit the prominent temple overlooking the village center. Depending on the day's activities, you may observe monks engaged in prayer and visit the community kitchen behind the temple, where local families take turns preparing meals for pilgrims and monks.

Medieval Street Exploration: Wander through the narrow lanes of this tightly clustered village, with its traditional whitewashed stone-and-timber houses. Visit a local flour mill, where villagers process crops such as wheat, rice, and millet, and, when possible, see the village school.

Traditional Family Lunch: Enjoy a home-cooked meal with a local family inside a traditional Bhutanese house. Learn about the architecture and daily routines of these multi-story homes, which have historically been designed around farming, storage, and livestock.

Late Afternoon: Scenic Return Drive to Jakar

After spending time experiencing local life in Ura, begin the approximately three-hour return journey to Jakar. The drive provides another opportunity to enjoy Central Bhutan's forested mountain scenery, with occasional stops along the way for photographs as the changing afternoon light falls across the valleys.

Arrive back at your resort in time to relax before dinner.

Day 3 Summary

Altitude: 3,100 m / 10,170 ft (Ura Valley); Serthangla Pass ~3,590 m / 11,778 ft

Distance Traveled: ~96 km / 60 miles (round-trip drive between Jakar and Ura)

Time Involved: ~7–8 hours (including driving, optional 1-hour hike, village tour, and home visit)

Main Sights & Activities: Serthangla Pass, Optional Downhill Pass Hike, Ura Village Walk, Ura Lhakhang & Community Kitchen Visit, Local Family Home Visit & Traditional Lunch, Village Flour Mill & School Visit

Overnight: Rinchenling Resort (or similar)

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Insider's Pro Tip: If visiting in spring, particularly from late March through May, the trail descending from Serthangla Pass can be especially scenic, with seasonal rhododendrons, primroses, and other wildflowers. If you would like to purchase local products such as handcrafted wooden bowls (dappa) or raw honey, carry some Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN), as payment options may be limited in remote villages.

Day 4: From Bumthang to Phobjikha – A Scenic Drive Through Bhutan’s Heartland

Morning: Mountain Pass Crossing & Historic Trongsa

Your journey continues as you leave Jakar and Bumthang and drive west toward historic Trongsa, before continuing to the peaceful Phobjikha Valley. Begin with a scenic ascent through misty forests of fir and rhododendron to Yotong La Pass (3,425 m / 11,237 ft). As you descend toward Trongsa, pause at the Trongsa Dzong Viewpoint for a spectacular view of Bhutan's largest fortress, dramatically perched on a ridge above the Mangde Chhu gorge.

Upon reaching historic Trongsa, explore two important landmarks:

Trongsa Dzong: This imposing fortress-monastery is closely associated with Bhutan's royal history and was once a strategic seat of power controlling the historic East-West trade route. Its maze of courtyards, temples, and administrative buildings reflects the importance of Trongsa in Bhutan's political and religious history.

Ta Dzong (Royal Heritage Museum): Set inside a former watchtower above Trongsa Dzong, this museum houses royal memorabilia, religious artifacts, and exhibits highlighting Bhutan's monarchy and cultural heritage.

Enjoy lunch with views overlooking the dramatic Trongsa landscape, often hosted at Yangkhil Resort, before continuing west.

Afternoon: Historic Monuments & High-Pass Scenic Route

Resume your journey toward Phobjikha Valley, following a scenic mountain road through forested hills and high-altitude landscapes.

Chendebji Chorten: Stop along the road to admire this distinctive 18th-century stone stupa, built in the Nepalese style and traditionally associated with the defeat of a powerful demon. Its painted eyes facing the four cardinal directions make it one of the memorable landmarks along this mountain route.

Pele La Pass (3,420 m / 11,220 ft): Cross Pele La, traditionally regarded as the geographical divide between Central and Western Bhutan. Prayer flags fluttering around the pass and views toward the Black Mountains create a dramatic transition as you leave central Bhutan behind.

Descent to Phobjikha Valley: At Nobding, turn toward Phobjikha and descend into its broad glacial valley. The landscape changes noticeably as dense evergreen forests give way to open meadows, marshland, and the expansive valley floor.

Evening: Peaceful Valley Arrival & Black-Necked Crane Haven

Arrive in the tranquil Phobjikha Valley in the late afternoon. If you're traveling during the black-necked crane season, generally from late October through February or early March, keep watch for these endangered migratory birds that spend the winter in the valley.

Check into your lodge, settle into the peaceful surroundings, and enjoy a warm dinner as temperatures drop in the high valley.

Day 4 Summary

Altitude: 2,900 m / 9,514 ft (Phobjikha Valley); Yotong La Pass reaches 3,425 m / 11,237 ft and Pele La Pass reaches 3,420 m / 11,220 ft

Distance Traveled: ~150–188 km / 93–117 miles

Time Involved: ~6–7 hours (including mountain drive, pass stops, lunch, and sightseeing)

Main Sights & Activities: Yotong La Pass, Trongsa Dzong Viewpoint, Trongsa Dzong, Ta Dzong (Royal Heritage Museum), Chendebji Chorten, Pele La Pass, Scenic Arrival in Phobjikha Valley

Overnight: Dewachen Hotel or Gakiling Guesthouse (or similar)

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Insider's Pro Tip: Phobjikha is a high-altitude valley, and evenings can be quite cold, particularly during the winter months. Pack warm layers for the evening and ask your lodge about a traditional bukhari (wood-burning stove) or hot-water bottle to keep your room and bed cozy.

Day 5: Phobjikha Valley to Punakha – Nature Trails & Subtropical Valleys

Morning: Nature Trail Hike & Gangtey Monastery

Begin your morning in the serene Phobjikha Valley, one of Bhutan's most beautiful high-altitude valleys. After breakfast, set out to explore the valley on foot, combining gentle hiking with cultural discovery.

Gangtey Nature Trail: Enjoy a peaceful walk through forested ridges, open meadows, and pine woods, with sweeping views across the valley. The trail provides an easy way to experience Phobjikha's natural beauty while passing traditional farmhouses and rural landscapes.

Gangtey Monastery (Gangtey Goenpa): Perched on a ridge overlooking the expansive valley, this impressive Nyingma monastery is an important center of Buddhist learning and practice. Explore its traditional architecture and peaceful courtyards while enjoying panoramic views across the valley floor.

Black-Necked Crane Habitat: If traveling during the crane season, generally from late October through February or early March, look across the valley's open wetlands for black-necked cranes that migrate here from the Tibetan Plateau to spend the winter.

Afternoon: Scenic Drive to Subtropical Punakha

After lunch, leave Phobjikha and begin your scenic drive toward Punakha, covering approximately 80 km / 50 miles in 2.5 to 3 hours.

The road gradually descends from the high valley into a noticeably warmer and greener landscape. Watch as cool mountain forests give way to lush subtropical hillsides, terraced rice fields, banana plants, and traditional farmhouses. The dramatic change in elevation makes this one of the most scenic transitions of your Western and Central Bhutan Tour.

Evening: Arrival in Warm Punakha Valley

By late afternoon, arrive in the Punakha Valley, at approximately 1,300 m / 4,265 ft, and check into your resort.

Spend the remainder of the evening relaxing and enjoying Punakha's noticeably milder climate, a welcome contrast to the high mountain passes and cool valleys of Central Bhutan.

Day 5 Summary

Altitude: 1,300 m / 4,265 ft (Punakha Valley)

Distance Traveled: ~80 km / 50 miles

Time Involved: ~5–6 hours (including nature walk, monastery visit, lunch, and scenic drive)

Main Sights & Activities: Gangtey Nature Trail Hike, Gangtey Monastery (Gangtey Goenpa), Phobjikha Valley Crane Habitat Walk, Scenic Descent to Punakha

Overnight: Zingkham Resort (or similar)

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Insider's Pro Tip: The Gangtey Nature Trail is generally an easy downhill walk of about 1.5–2 hours, beginning near Gangtey Monastery and descending toward the valley floor. It's a memorable experience on a Bhutan highlights tour, particularly for photography, with open meadow vistas, traditional farmhouses, and forested hills along the route.

Day 6: Punakha Valley – Iconic Fortresses, Terraced Rice Paddies & Monastic Life

Morning: Khamsum Yulley Hike & Ritsha Village Immersion

Begin your morning in the lush Punakha Valley with an active cultural experience combining a scenic hike, rural village life, and traditional Bhutanese cuisine.

Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten Hike: Cross the suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu River and follow a moderate trail through terraced rice fields and pine woods. The hike takes approximately 45–60 minutes each way, leading to the four-story chorten built by the Queen Mother to ward off negative forces and promote peace and harmony. Inside, intricate Buddhist artwork and sacred imagery fill the structure, while the upper level offers sweeping views across the Punakha Valley.

Ritsha Village – the “Rice Bowl of Bhutan”: Continue to this charming riverside farming community, known for its fertile rice-growing fields. Walk among traditional rammed-earth farmhouses, see local agricultural practices, and experience the quieter pace of rural Bhutanese life.

Farmhouse Lunch or Riverside Picnic: Enjoy an authentic Bhutanese meal at a local farmhouse in Ritsha or, weather permitting, a scenic picnic near the river. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience local food and hospitality in a relaxed setting.

Afternoon: The Majestic Punakha Dzong & Nalanda Buddhist Institute

Continue your exploration of Punakha with two of the valley's most significant cultural landmarks.

Punakha Dzong: Set dramatically at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (Father River) and Mo Chhu (Mother River), the “Palace of Great Happiness” is one of Bhutan's most impressive architectural landmarks. Built in 1637, the fortress-monastery is distinguished by its towering whitewashed walls, ornate woodwork, and golden roof details. It has played an important role in Bhutan's religious and political history and remains closely associated with royal ceremonies and major state occasions.

Nalanda Buddhist Institute (Dale Goemba): Perched on a hillside above the Punakha Valley, this peaceful monastic college provides a glimpse into Bhutan's living Buddhist tradition. Explore the monastery grounds, enjoy expansive valley views, and, when appropriate, interact with young monks who are studying Buddhist philosophy and practicing English.

Evening: Riverside Relaxation

Return to your resort in the late afternoon and enjoy a relaxed evening in Punakha's warm, subtropical climate. After an active day of hiking and cultural sightseeing, unwind at the resort and enjoy the peaceful surroundings before continuing toward Western Bhutan tomorrow.

Day 6 Summary

Altitude: 1,300 m / 4,265 ft

Distance Traveled: ~30–40 km / 18–25 miles (local valley transfers and sightseeing)

Time Involved: ~7–8 hours (including hike, village walk, dzong visit, and monastic visit)

Main Sights & Activities: Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten Hike, Ritsha Village Walk, Farmhouse or Riverside Lunch, Punakha Dzong, Nalanda Buddhist Institute

Overnight: Zhingkham Resort (or similar)

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Insider's Pro Tip: Just behind Punakha Dzong is the Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of Bhutan's longest traditional cantilever footbridges. Draped in colorful prayer flags and spanning the rushing Pho Chhu, it offers an excellent vantage point for photographs. If time and conditions permit, ask your guide about crossing the bridge after your dzong visit.

Day 7: Punakha to Thimphu – Mountain Pass Views & Capital City Highlights

Morning: Scenic Pass Crossing & Dochula Memorial Stupas

After breakfast, bid farewell to warm Punakha and begin your drive toward Thimphu, Bhutan's capital, approximately 75 km / 47 miles away. The road climbs steadily through pine and rhododendron forests toward Dochula Pass (3,100 m / 10,168 ft), one of Bhutan's most scenic mountain passes.

Take time to walk among the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens, a striking collection of memorial stupas built under the patronage of the Queen Mother. On clear days, Dochula offers spectacular panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Pause for lunch at the pass or at a scenic restaurant farther along the route as you descend toward Thimphu.

Afternoon: Thimphu Landmarks & Buddha Dordenma

Continue downhill into the broad Thimphu Valley and arrive in Bhutan's capital. With no traffic lights, Thimphu has a distinctive, unhurried character despite being the country's largest urban center.

Begin your afternoon sightseeing with several of the city's best-known landmarks:

Memorial Chorten: Visit this iconic white stupa with its golden spire in the heart of Thimphu. Watch local residents spin the prayer wheels and circumambulate the chorten as part of their daily religious practice.

Buddha Dordenma (Buddha Point): Drive to Kuenselphodrang Hill to see the enormous seated Buddha statue overlooking the Thimphu Valley. At 51.5 meters / 169 feet tall, the gilded bronze statue is one of the world's largest seated Buddha statues and provides sweeping views across the capital.

Norzin Lam: Take a leisurely walk along Thimphu's main thoroughfare, where traditional Bhutanese architecture blends with shops, cafés, and everyday city life.

Authentic Bhutanese Crafts Bazaar: Browse the colorful stalls for locally made textiles, bamboo crafts, woodcarvings, prayer wheels, jewelry, and other traditional handicrafts.

Evening: Thimphu Market Walk & Relaxation

As evening approaches, settle into your hotel and enjoy some free time in the capital. Depending on the day's timing, you may have an opportunity to continue exploring central Thimphu or browse local shops before dinner.

This relaxed evening provides a pleasant change of pace after several days of mountain roads, village visits, and outdoor excursions.

Day 7 Summary

Altitude: 2,320 m / 7,612 ft (Thimphu); Dochula Pass reaches 3,100 m / 10,168 ft

Distance Traveled: ~75 km / 47 miles

Time Involved: ~6–7 hours (including pass stop, drive, lunch, and sightseeing)

Main Sights & Activities: Dochula Pass, 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens, Memorial Chorten, Buddha Dordenma (Buddha Point), Norzin Lam, Authentic Bhutanese Crafts Bazaar

Overnight: Thimphu Deluxe (or similar)

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Insider's Pro Tip: When visiting Buddhist monuments such as the 108 chortens at Dochula and the Memorial Chorten, walk clockwise around the structure as a sign of respect. Buddha Point can also become quite windy, particularly later in the day, so keep a light jacket or windbreaker handy.

Day 8: Sightseeing of Thimphu: Thimphu Culture, Crafts & Monastic Learning Centers

Morning: Local Markets, National Sport & Master Crafts

Spend another day discovering the cultural character of Thimphu, with a mix of local markets, Bhutan's national sport, and traditional craftsmanship.

Centenary Farmers Market: Explore the colorful stalls of Thimphu's farmers market, where vendors from across the country bring fresh produce, grains, dried chilies, spices, cheese, incense, and other local products. The market offers an interesting glimpse into Bhutan's food traditions and everyday commerce.

National Archery Stadium: Walk over to the national archery grounds to see Bhutan's favorite sport in action. Traditional bamboo bows and modern compound bows are both used in competitions, with targets positioned 145 meters apart. If a match is taking place, you may see competitors accompanied by traditional songs, dances, and spirited celebrations after successful shots.

National Institute for Zorig Chusum: Visit the institute dedicated to Bhutan's 13 traditional arts and crafts, where students train in skills such as thangka painting, woodcarving, slate carving, embroidery, and sculpture. Watching the students at work provides a closer look at how Bhutan's artistic traditions are being preserved for future generations.

Afternoon: Living Heritage & Tashichho Dzong

After lunch, continue exploring Thimphu's living cultural traditions and historic institutions.

Simply Bhutan Museum: Step into this interactive living museum to experience aspects of traditional Bhutanese life. Depending on the day's program, you can sample butter tea (suja), learn about national dress such as the gho and kira, try traditional activities, and enjoy demonstrations of Bhutanese music and folk traditions.

Tashichho Dzong: In the late afternoon, visit the magnificent “Fortress of the Glorious Religion,” an important center of Bhutan's government and religious administration. Its expansive courtyards, traditional architecture, and richly decorated golden roofs are especially striking in the softer light of late afternoon.

Clock Tower Square: End your city sightseeing with a relaxed walk around this lively pedestrian area. Cafés, shops, restaurants, and local gathering places make it a pleasant spot to observe contemporary life in Bhutan's capital.

Optional Excursion: Tango & Cheri Monastery Hiking Experience

For travelers who prefer a more active day, the following excursion can replace some of the regular city sightseeing. The exact combination should be discussed with your guide based on your interests, hiking ability, and available time.

Tango Goemba Hike: Follow a forested trail through oak and rhododendron toward Tango Monastery, one of Bhutan's important centers of higher Buddhist studies. The hike takes approximately 2.5–3 hours round trip, depending on pace and conditions.

Cheri Goemba Add-On: For an additional hike of roughly two hours, continue toward Cheri Monastery, crossing a traditional covered wooden bridge before climbing through the forest to the monastery. The site has strong historical and spiritual connections to Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and Bhutan's early Buddhist monastic tradition.

Pangri Zampa: On the return journey, stop at Pangri Zampa Monastery, a historic religious site associated with Bhutan's traditional astrology tradition. If you are interested in a personal astrology consultation, advance arrangements may be required.

Day 8 Summary

Altitude: 2,320 m / 7,612 ft (Thimphu)

Insider's Pro Tip: Keep a lightweight long-sleeved jacket and full-length pants or an ankle-length skirt in your daypack. Comfortable clothing is fine for sightseeing and hiking, but when visiting sacred dzongs and monasteries, dress modestly with your shoulders and knees covered. You may also be asked to remove hats, sunglasses, or footwear when entering certain sacred interiors.

Day 9: The Ultimate Hike to Tiger’s Nest & Sacred Paro Valley

Morning: Pilgrimage to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery)

Today is one of the defining experiences of your 10-day Bhutan highlights tour as you hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery), Bhutan's most iconic landmark. The sacred monastery complex clings dramatically to a granite cliff approximately 900 meters / 3,000 feet above the Paro Valley.

Start early, ideally around 7:00 AM, when temperatures are cooler and the trail is generally quieter. The path climbs through pine, juniper, and rhododendron forests, with several viewpoints offering spectacular perspectives of the monastery and surrounding mountains.

After reaching the complex, explore its sacred temples and cliffside shrines. According to Bhutanese Buddhist tradition, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) arrived at this site in the 8th century after traveling on the back of a tigress and meditated in the caves where the monastery now stands.

Hiking Note: Ponies are available for travelers who would like assistance with the initial ascent, generally up to the cafeteria viewpoint. Beyond this point, the route becomes steeper, with narrow paths and numerous stone steps, and must be completed on foot. Ponies are not used for the descent.

Afternoon: Ancient Temples & Historic Fortresses

After returning to the valley for lunch, continue exploring the cultural heritage of Paro Valley.

Kyichu Lhakhang: Visit one of Bhutan's oldest and most revered temples, traditionally believed to have been founded in the 7th century. Its peaceful courtyards, prayer wheels, and ancient orange trees provide a tranquil setting for reflection and exploration.

Drukgyel Dzong (Optional): Continue north to the atmospheric ruins of this historic 17th-century fortress. Built during Bhutan's conflicts with Tibet, the dzong played an important defensive role in the Paro Valley. On clear days, the distant peak of Mount Jomolhari (7,326 m / 24,035 ft) may be visible beyond the valley.

Local Archery Match: If a match or practice session is taking place, stop near the local archery grounds to watch Bhutan's national sport and experience the lively atmosphere surrounding a traditional competition.

Evening: Traditional Hot Stone Bath & Farmhouse Dinner

After a rewarding day on the Tiger's Nest trail, relax with two traditional Bhutanese experiences.

Dotsho (Traditional Hot Stone Bath): Soak in a wooden tub filled with water and aromatic medicinal herbs while river stones are heated over a fire and added to warm the bath. This traditional treatment is a soothing way to relax tired legs after the hike. Optional and subject to advance arrangement.

Authentic Farmhouse Dinner: End the day with a home-cooked Bhutanese meal hosted by a local family. Depending on the household and menu, you may enjoy dishes such as Ema Datshi, Bhutan's famous chili-and-cheese dish, accompanied by locally grown red rice and seasonal vegetables.

Day 9 Summary

Altitude: 2,250 m / 7,382 ft (Paro Valley); Tiger's Nest Monastery at approximately 3,120 m / 10,236 ft

Distance Traveled: ~30 km / 19 miles (local valley transfers); Tiger's Nest hike ~6.5 km / 4 miles round trip

Overnight: Khangkhu Resort (or similar)

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Insider's Pro Tip: Wear comfortable, modest clothing for Tiger's Nest, with shoulders and knees covered when entering the sacred temple interiors. Some personal belongings may need to be left outside the temple areas, so follow the instructions provided by the site staff and your guide. Trekking poles can be especially helpful on the steep stone steps during the descent.

Day 10: Farewell to Bhutan – Departure from Paro Airport

Morning: Final Breakfast & Scenic Airport Transfer

Enjoy a final breakfast at your resort and take in the peaceful surroundings of the Paro Valley. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for a final stroll around the hotel grounds, a few photographs, or a quiet moment to reflect on the experiences and landscapes of the past ten days.

At the designated time, meet your guide and driver for the short transfer to Paro International Airport, typically around 15–20 minutes from hotels in the Paro area. Your guide will assist with the departure process before you say farewell to Bhutan.

Afternoon: Departure Flight & Himalayan Farewell

Board your flight from Paro and watch as the aircraft climbs above the narrow Paro Valley. If weather and flight routing permit, the ascent can offer spectacular aerial views of Bhutan's forested mountains, winding valleys, and distant Himalayan peaks.

As you leave the Kingdom of Bhutan, take with you memories of ancient monasteries, dramatic mountain passes, peaceful valleys, traditional villages, and the warm hospitality encountered throughout your journey.

Day 10 Summary

Altitude: 2,250 m / 7,382 ft (Paro)

Distance Traveled: ~2 km / 1.25 miles (hotel-to-airport transfer; varies by hotel location)
