Trip Introduction
A gentle winter trek through the farming country above Punakha, walking three days via Limukha, Dochen La and Chhungsakha to the sacred lake of Tsho Shokha at Samtengang. Around it come Thimphu's Buddha Dordenma, Punakha Dzong, Dzongdrakha's cliffside temples and a last climb to Tiger's Nest above Paro.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Bhutan
Your journey into the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon begins as your flight descends into Paro, offering spectacular aerial views of the Himalayas. Upon cleaing immigration and custom formalities, you will be warmly greeted by your private guide and driver with a traditional welcome khada (white silk scarf), signaling the welcome start of your trip.
The cultural exploration part of Samtengang Winter Trek starts immediately with a short drive to the Paro Airport Bird’s Eye Viewpoint. Perched high above the valley floor, this vantage point offers a sweeping panoramic perspective of the entire Paro Valley and one of the world's most dramatic runway landings.
After enjoying a delicious lunch featuring regional specialties at a local Paro restaurant, dive into the kingdom’s rich history:
National Museum (Ta Dzong): Housed in an ancient 17th-century watchtower overlooking the valley, the museum showcases a remarkable collection of Bhutanese art, sacred thangkas, historic armor, and cultural artifacts.Rinpung Dzong: Walk down to the "Fortress of the Heap of Jewels," an outstanding example of classic Bhutanese architecture. With its towering whitewashed walls, intricate woodwork, and scenic wooden cantilever bridge, it remains both an administrative center and a monastic school.
In the late afternoon, embark on a scenic one-hour drive along the Paro Chhu and Wang Chhu rivers toward the capital city, Thimphu. Upon arrival, check into your boutique hotel.
(Time Permitting) Your guide will lead you on a relaxed evening stroll through Thimphu's main street and local craft shops, letting you absorb the atmosphere of the world's only capital city without traffic lights.
Meals Included: Lunch, DinnerOvernight: Thimphu Deluxe Hotel (or similar mid-range boutique hotel)
Day 2: Explore the landmarks and attractions of Thimphu
Morning: Buddha Dordenma & Spiritual Thimphu
After breakfast, begin your full day of exploration in Bhutan's capital with a drive to Kuenselphodrang, overlooking the Thimphu Valley.
Buddha Dordenma: Standing prominently above the capital, the massive Buddha Dordenma is one of Thimphu's most recognizable landmarks. The gilded bronze statue of Shakyamuni Buddha rises approximately 51.5 m (169 ft) and contains thousands of smaller Buddha statues within its interior.
Take time to explore the monument and surrounding grounds while enjoying expansive views across the Thimphu Valley and the forested mountains that surround the capital.
National Memorial Chorten: Continue to the National Memorial Chorten, one of Thimphu's most active religious landmarks. Built in 1974 in memory of Bhutan's third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the whitewashed chorten remains an important center of daily Buddhist devotion. Join local residents and pilgrims walking clockwise around the monument, turning prayer wheels and reciting prayers. Rather than functioning simply as a historic monument, the chorten offers an opportunity to observe Bhutanese Buddhist traditions as part of everyday life.
Late Morning: Simply Bhutan & Local Life
Simply Bhutan Museum : Continue to Simply Bhutan, an interactive living museum that provides an engaging introduction to traditional Bhutanese culture and rural life. The museum recreates elements of traditional homes and village customs while introducing visitors to Bhutanese architecture, household practices, clothing, crafts, food, and other aspects of the country's cultural heritage. The experience complements the monasteries and dzongs on your itinerary by providing a closer look at everyday Bhutanese traditions.
Farmers Market & Changlimithang Archery: If your stay in Thimphu falls over the weekend, visit the city's farmers market, where vendors display seasonal vegetables, fruits, local cheese, dried foods, spices, and other products from different parts of Bhutan. Nearby, stop at the Changlimithang archery ground if a tournament or match is underway. Archery is Bhutan's national sport, but a traditional match is as much a social occasion as a sporting competition. Watch the archers shoot at remarkably distant targets while teammates celebrate successful shots with songs, dances, and good-natured exchanges between competing teams. The market and archery visit will depend on the day of the week and whether a match is taking place.
Afternoon: Motithang Takin Preserve & WanWangditse Goemba Trail
Motithang Takin Preserve: After lunch at a local restaurant, drive into the forested hills above Thimphu to visit the Motithang Takin Preserve. The preserve protects the takin, Bhutan's national animal and one of the Himalayas' most unusual mammals. Walk along the wooded paths and viewing areas for an opportunity to observe these distinctive animals while learning about their place in Bhutanese culture and conservation. From Motithang, continue higher into the hills above the capital to begin one of Thimphu's most enjoyable short hikes.
Wangditse Goemba to Dechen Phodrang Hike: Set out on a scenic walk through the forests above Thimphu toward Wangditse Goemba. The trail passes through stands of blue pine, oak, and rhododendron, with prayer flags appearing along sections of the route and occasional openings revealing views across the Thimphu Valley. This relatively gentle hike provides a welcome transition from sightseeing by vehicle to exploring Bhutan on foot and serves as useful preparation for the Samtengang Winter Trek later in your journey. At Wangditse Goemba, pause to enjoy the peaceful surroundings before continuing along the forested trail toward Dechen Phodrang.
The walk eventually brings you to Dechen Phodrang Monastery, whose name means the “Palace of Great Bliss.” Located on a wooded hillside at the northern end of Thimphu, the monastery serves as a monastic school for young monks and occupies a site associated with one of Thimphu's earlier dzongs.
Take time to appreciate the tranquil setting before meeting your vehicle and returning toward central Thimphu.
Late Afternoon: Tashichho Dzong
Conclude the day's sightseeing at Tashichho Dzong, one of Bhutan's most important fortress-monasteries and a defining landmark of the capital.
Situated beside the Wang Chhu, the impressive complex serves important administrative and religious functions. Its massive whitewashed walls, traditional timberwork, richly decorated interiors, broad courtyards, and distinctive golden-roofed towers provide a striking example of Bhutanese dzong architecture.
Walk through the areas open to visitors and learn about the continuing role of the dzong in Bhutan's system of government and monastic life.
After the visit, return to your hotel for dinner and a well-earned rest. Tomorrow, leave Thimphu and continue toward the warmer Punakha Valley, bringing you closer to the starting point of your trek.

After breakfast, depart Thimphu and follow the winding mountain road through forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron toward Dochula Pass (3,100 m / 10,171 ft), the highest point of today's journey.
Dochula Pass & 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens: Stop at Dochula Pass, where the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens rise prominently across the mountain ridge. Surrounded by prayer flags and forested hills, the pass is one of the most scenic stops on the road between Thimphu and Punakha.
On a clear day, particularly during the crisp winter months, the pass offers sweeping views toward Bhutan's snow-covered Himalayan peaks.
Take time to walk among the chortens, enjoy the mountain scenery, and appreciate the dramatic change in landscape before beginning the descent toward Punakha.
Late Morning: Descend into Punakha Valley
From Dochula, continue downhill through a remarkable transition in vegetation and climate. The road descends from cool mountain forest into the much warmer, subtropical Punakha Valley, passing small settlements, cultivated hillsides, and terraced farmland along the way.
By late morning or around midday, arrive in Punakha and continue to your hotel.
Midday: Lunch in Punakha
Check into your hotel and enjoy lunch before beginning your afternoon exploration of the valley.
Situated at a considerably lower elevation than Thimphu, Punakha has a warmer climate and fertile landscape shaped by the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Rice terraces, traditional farmhouses, subtropical vegetation, and forested hills give the valley a noticeably different character from the higher valleys you have visited so far.
Afternoon: Punakha Dzong & Pho Chhu Suspension Bridge
Punakha Dzong: After lunch, visit magnificent Punakha Dzong, strategically positioned at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
Known as Pungtang Dechen Phodrang, commonly translated as the “Palace of Great Happiness,” the dzong was constructed in the 17th century and has played a central role in Bhutan's religious and political history.
Cross the traditional wooden bridge leading toward the fortress and explore its impressive courtyards, temples, massive whitewashed walls, elaborately carved and painted woodwork, and towering central structure.
The setting is equally impressive, with the two rivers meeting below the fortress and forested mountains rising around the valley.
Pho Chhu Suspension Bridge: Continue to the Pho Chhu Suspension Bridge, a long pedestrian bridge stretching high above the river.
Cross the prayer-flag-draped bridge for expansive views along the Pho Chhu and across the surrounding Punakha countryside. The walk also provides a glimpse of the landscape through which you will begin trekking tomorrow.
Late Afternoon: Chimi Lhakhang & Rural Village Walk
Later in the afternoon, drive toward the village of Sopsokha for a leisurely walk through farmland and traditional settlements to Chimi Lhakhang.
The temple is associated with the unconventional 15th-century Buddhist master Drukpa Kunley, popularly known as the “Divine Madman,” whose teachings used humor, poetry, and unconventional methods to challenge social and religious conventions.
The walk to the temple passes through agricultural fields and village surroundings, providing another opportunity to experience rural life in the Punakha Valley.
Chimi Lhakhang remains an important pilgrimage site, particularly for couples and families who visit to receive blessings associated with fertility and children.
After visiting the temple, walk back through the village and return to your hotel.

Day 4: Samtengang Winter Trek Begins Today.
Morning: Begin the Samtengang Winter Trek
Today, leave the road behind and begin the first walking stage of the Samtengang Winter Trek, setting out from the Punakha Valley toward the rural settlement of Limukha. The trail gradually climbs from the warmer river valley into forested hillsides, agricultural landscapes, and quieter mountain countryside.
Your trek begins near the Pho Chhu suspension bridge, close to Punakha Dzong. After crossing the river, follow the trail away from the valley floor and begin a steady ascent through the hills above Punakha.
The route passes through forests of chir pine, oak, and rhododendron, with occasional openings providing views back toward the Punakha Valley and surrounding hills. As you gain elevation, the landscape gradually changes from the warmer subtropical vegetation of the valley floor to cooler forest and mountain farmland.
The climb is sustained rather than technically difficult, so settle into a comfortable pace and take time to enjoy the changing scenery along the way.
Midday: Trail Lunch & Forest Rest
Around midday, stop at a suitable location along the trail for lunch and a well-earned rest.
Depending on the day's logistics and conditions, your trekking crew will prepare or serve lunch at a scenic stopping point. This is also a good opportunity to refill your water, adjust clothing layers, and rest your legs before continuing toward Limukha.
After lunch, resume the gradual climb through forest and increasingly open countryside.
Afternoon: Trek through Farmland to Limukha
As you approach Limukha, the forest begins to give way to agricultural land, terraced fields, scattered farmhouses, and open mountain slopes.
Situated at approximately 1,980 m (6,496 ft), Limukha is a traditional farming settlement surrounded by cultivated fields and forested ridges. Rice cultivation forms an important part of rural life in this region, and the walk provides an opportunity to see a side of Bhutan that is quite different from the dzongs, monasteries, and towns visited during the cultural portion of your journey.
Continue along village paths through the surrounding countryside, passing traditional farmhouses and cultivated land as you make your way toward the campsite.
Interactions with local residents may occur naturally along the trail, but village life continues according to its own daily rhythms, providing an authentic glimpse into rural Bhutan rather than a staged cultural experience.
Late Afternoon: Arrive at Limukha Camp
By late afternoon, arrive at your campsite near Limukha Village, where your trekking crew will help you settle in for your first night on the trail.
Enjoy a hot drink and some time to rest after the day's climb. As temperatures begin to fall after sunset, change into warm layers and gather in the dining tent for a freshly prepared evening meal.
Your first night of camping offers a complete change of pace from Bhutan's towns and hotels. Surrounded by farmland, forests, and mountain ridges, settle into camp and enjoy the quiet rural setting before retiring to your tent for the night.

Leaving Limukha, begin with a gradual ascent through farmland before entering the forest. The trail climbs steadily through stands of oak, rhododendron, and pine as you make your way toward the highest point of today's route.
With fewer settlements along this section, the morning walk offers a peaceful contrast to the cultivated landscapes around Limukha, taking you deeper into the forested hills between the Punakha and Wangdue regions.
Late Morning: Cross Dochen La Pass
Continue climbing toward Dochen La, the highest point of today's trek at approximately 2,645 m / 8,678 ft.
Prayer flags mark the forested pass, where you can pause for a well-earned rest after the morning ascent. When skies are clear, openings along the ridge offer views across the surrounding valleys, forested mountains, and distant ridgelines.
Dochen La is also the highest point reached during the three-day Samtengang trekking portion of your journey. Despite the elevation, the route remains considerably lower than many of Bhutan's high-altitude trekking trails.
Take some time to enjoy the surroundings before beginning the long descent toward Chhungsakha.
Midday: Forest Descent & Trail Lunch
From Dochen La, follow the trail downhill through broadleaf and mixed forest. Oak, rhododendron, pine, and other mountain vegetation line much of the route as the trail gradually loses elevation.
Around midday, stop at a suitable location for lunch and a rest. Depending on trail conditions and the day's logistics, your trekking crew will prepare or serve lunch at a convenient stopping point along the route.
After lunch, continue descending through the forest toward the agricultural landscapes surrounding Chhungsakha.

After spending much of the day walking through woodland, arriving among the farms and homes of Chhungsakha provides another glimpse into everyday rural life along the Punakha Trek route.
Chhungsakha is also associated with Bhutanese religious traditions and local stories connected with Drukpa Kunley, the unconventional 15th-century Buddhist master popularly known as the “Divine Madman.” Depending on the route followed and local access, your guide can introduce you to sacred places and stories associated with the village.
Late Afternoon: Settle into Camp at Chhungsakha
Arrive at your campsite near Chhungsakha and settle in for your second night on the trail.
After a longer day of walking, enjoy a hot drink and take time to rest. If time and energy permit, explore the immediate surroundings on foot or simply enjoy the quiet rural setting as the day's light fades across the hills.
Later, gather in the dining tent for a freshly prepared dinner and review tomorrow's route with your guide. Your final trekking day continues from Chhungsakha toward Samtengang, completing the walking portion of your journey through this peaceful corner of western Bhutan.

Leaving Chhungsakha behind, begin with a gradual descent through open agricultural countryside. The trail passes cultivated fields, scattered farmhouses, and forested slopes as it makes its way toward the Pe Chhu River.
After reaching the valley bottom, cross a footbridge over the river and begin the day's main ascent toward the rural settlements above.
Late Morning: Climb through Sha Village
From the Pe Chhu, the trail climbs steadily through the village of Sha, where traditional farmhouses and terraced fields provide another close look at everyday rural life in this part of Bhutan.
Continue uphill through a changing landscape of farmland and forest. Sections of the trail pass beneath pine and oak trees, with seasonal vegetation and wildflowers adding color to the surrounding hillsides.

Late Morning: Descend toward Chhuzomsa
Continue descending through rural landscapes toward Chhuzomsa, situated at approximately 1,300 m / 4,265 ft.
As you lose elevation, temperatures generally become warmer and the vegetation changes accordingly. The final section provides one last opportunity to enjoy the quiet farms, forests, and villages that characterize this Punakha Trek before returning to the road.

The return crossing also provides an opportunity to appreciate the dramatic change in elevation and landscape between Punakha and western Bhutan.
Continue downhill toward Thimphu and follow the road through the river valleys toward Paro.
Midday: Tamchog Lhakhang & Traditional Iron-Chain Bridge
Along the way, stop near Tamchog Lhakhang, also known as Tachogang Lhakhang, situated on a hillside across the Paro Chhu.
The temple is associated with Thangtong Gyalpo, the renowned 15th-century Tibetan Buddhist master, engineer, and bridge builder famous for constructing iron-chain bridges throughout the Himalayan region.
Cross the traditional iron-chain bridge spanning the Paro Chhu and walk toward the temple grounds. Prayer flags, the rushing river, and surrounding forested hills make this a particularly scenic stop on the journey into Paro.
After the visit, continue toward Paro, stopping for lunch along the way or after arriving in the valley, depending on the day's timing.
Afternoon: Dzongdrakha Monastery
Before checking into your hotel, make a side excursion to Dzongdrakha Monastery, a small cliffside temple complex overlooking the southern end of the Paro Valley.
Sometimes referred to as the “Mini Tiger's Nest” because of its dramatic location beneath a rocky cliff, Dzongdrakha offers a quieter introduction to Bhutan's cliffside monastic architecture before tomorrow's hike to Taktsang Monastery.
A short walk leads toward the monastery complex, passing through forest and rural surroundings before reaching the temples built against the rock face.
Explore the sacred chapels and enjoy expansive views across the Bondey area and Paro Valley, with traditional villages, cultivated fields, and forested mountains spread across the landscape below.
After visiting Dzongdrakha, return to your vehicle and continue to Khangkhu Resort.

You visited the fortress during daylight on your arrival day, but seeing it illuminated after dark offers a different perspective. Morning: Hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery
Your final full day in Bhutan culminates with one of the country's most memorable experiences, the pilgrimage hike to Taktsang Monastery, better known as Tiger's Nest.
After breakfast, drive to the trailhead in the upper Paro Valley and begin the steady climb toward the monastery. The trail ascends through forests of blue pine and oak, with prayer flags appearing along sections of the route and occasional openings providing views across the surrounding mountains.
The hike involves a sustained uphill climb, but after several days of walking on the Samtengang Winter Trek, you will already have a good sense of your comfortable hiking pace. There is no need to rush; take regular breaks, stay hydrated, and enjoy the forest and mountain scenery along the way.
Mid-Morning: Tiger's Nest Viewpoint & Cafeteria
After approximately halfway through the ascent, reach the Taktsang Cafeteria, a popular resting point overlooking the monastery.
Pause for tea or refreshments and enjoy one of the classic views of Tiger's Nest, dramatically positioned against the rocky mountainside across the gorge.
From here, continue climbing toward the upper viewpoint, where the trail provides increasingly impressive perspectives of the monastery complex.
The final approach involves a series of stone steps descending into the gorge before climbing again toward the monastery. Along the way, pass a waterfall and prayer flags before reaching the entrance to this sacred complex.
Late Morning: Explore Taktsang Monastery
Perched at approximately 3,120 m / 10,236 ft, Taktsang is one of Bhutan's most revered Buddhist pilgrimage sites.
According to Bhutanese Buddhist tradition, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) came to this location in the 8th century and meditated in a cave associated with the present monastery. Tradition holds that he arrived at the site riding on the back of a tigress, giving rise to the name Taktsang, commonly translated as “Tiger's Nest.”
The monastery complex seen today developed centuries later, with the principal temple established in the 17th century.
Remove your shoes and follow your guide through the areas open to visitors, exploring sacred chapels, religious images, butter lamps, and meditation spaces while learning about the site's importance in Bhutanese Buddhism.
Take time to appreciate both the spiritual atmosphere and the extraordinary mountain setting before beginning your descent.
Early Afternoon: Descend to the Paro Valley
Retrace the trail downhill through the forest, stopping along the way for rest and photographs.
Depending on your pace and the day's arrangements, stop for lunch during or after the descent before continuing to the trailhead.
By mid-afternoon, meet your vehicle and return toward Paro after completing the hike.
Late Afternoon: Optional Traditional Farmhouse Visit
For those interested in extending the day's cultural experience, an optional visit to a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse can be arranged in the Paro Valley.
The visit provides an opportunity to see the interior of a traditional rural home and learn more about family life, architecture, food traditions, and agricultural practices in the valley.
Depending on the host and arrangements, you may also have an opportunity to sample local refreshments or ara, a traditional Bhutanese alcoholic drink.
Evening: Optional Traditional Hot Stone Bath
After the Tiger's Nest hike, you may choose to experience a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath, or Dotsho, at a local farmhouse.
The traditional bathing method uses river stones heated over a wood fire and placed in a separate section of a wooden bath, gradually warming the water. Local herbs may also be added according to the household's customary preparation.
A hot stone bath can be a relaxing way to unwind after several days of trekking and today's climb to Tiger's Nest.
The farmhouse visit and hot stone bath are optional experiences and are not included in the standard tour cost. Advance arrangements are recommended, preferably through your guide at least one day beforehand. The exact cost will be confirmed locally based on the farmhouse and services selected.
Evening: Farewell Dinner in Paro
Conclude your final evening in Bhutan with a farewell dinner.
Depending on the arrangements for your departure, dinner may be enjoyed at a local farmhouse, restaurant, or your hotel. Reflect on a journey that has taken you from the cultural landmarks of Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha through the rural landscapes of the Samtengang Winter Trek, and finally to one of Bhutan's most sacred pilgrimage sites.
After dinner, return to Khangkhu Resort for your final overnight in Bhutan.
