Trip Introduction

A 10-day trip through western Bhutan built around the Punakha Tshechu in February 2027, held at Punakha Dzong where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers meet. You watch the Cham mask dances and the Atsara clowns, see the giant Thongdrel unveiled before dawn on the final morning, walk the Phobjikha Valley, winter home of the black-necked cranes, and hike to Tiger's Nest.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Friday, Feb 12, 2027, Arrival in Paro, Dzongdrakha Excursion & Scenic Drive to Thimphu

Morning: Arrival & Warm Himalayan Welcome

Your 10-Day Punakha Tshechu Festival Tour of Bhutan begins with a dramatic flight into Paro International Airport, gliding past high Himalayan ridges into the lush valley below. Upon clearing customs and immigration formalities, meet your local Bhutanese guide and driver with a traditional Tashi Khaddar (white silk scarf) welcome. Following introduction, your guide will take you to a local restaurent for lunch.

Afternoon: Dzongdrakha Excursion & Drive to Thimphu

Following lunch, take a short scenic drive above the valley to Dzongdrakha Monastery ("Mini Taktsang"). Perched dramatically on a limestone cliff face overlooking the terraced farm fields of Bondhey village, this peaceful 16th-century complex provides panoramic valley vistas and a quiet spiritual atmosphere without the crowds.

After descending back to the valley road, set out on the drive toward Thimphu. Along the highway, make a stop at Tamchog Lhakhang to cross the Pa Chhu river via the historic suspension bridge constructed with centuries-old iron chain links forged by the Tibetan engineer-saint Thangtong Gyalpo. Continue past the confluence of the Paro and Thimphu rivers at Chhuzom and arrive in the capital city to check in to your hotel.

Evening: Free Time & Leisurely Town Stroll

Take time to unwind and settle into your room. In the late afternoon, enjoy an easy, self-paced stroll through downtown Thimphu along Norzin Lam and Clock Tower Square to observe daily life and soak in the evening atmosphere. Gather for a welcome dinner featuring authentic Bhutanese dishes and continental options.

Day 2: Saturday, Feb 13, 2027, Thimphu Full-Day Sightseeing, Cultural Immersion & Wangditse Nature Hike

Morning: Sacred Landmarks & Cultural Heritage

Begin your morning with a drive up to Kuenselphodrang Nature Park to visit the majestic Buddha Dordenma (Buddha Point). Standing 51.5 meters (169 ft) tall, this colossal bronze statue overlooks the southern entrance of the valley, housing 125,000 smaller gilded Buddha statues within its massive throne hall.

Descend back into the city to visit the National Memorial Chorten, one of Thimphu's most visible religious landmarks, where local elders gather daily to circumambulate and spin giant prayer wheels in prayer. Continue to the Simply Bhutan Museum, a living interactive museum where you can witness traditional archery demonstrations, folk songs, and indigenous architecture, offering a rich introduction to Bhutanese customs on this journey.

Afternoon: Wildlife Sanctuary, BBS Tower & Scenic Wangditse Hike

Following lunch, head north to the Motithang Takin Preserve to observe Bhutan's unique national animal, the takin, roaming within a preserved pine forest. Next, drive up to the BBS Tower (Sangaygang) viewpoint, draped in thousands of fluttering prayer flags, for an expansive aerial view over the Thimphu Valley.

From the BBS Tower area, embark on an easy, scenic ridge walk to Wangditse Goemba. The trail winds gently through blue pine and rhododendron forests, offering sweeping views of Tashichho Dzong and the northern valley. From Wangditse, continue descending down toward Dechenphodrang Monastery, a historic 12th-century site that now serves as a state monastic school for hundreds of young novice monks.

Evening: Tashichho Dzong Visit & Leisure

Conclude your sightseeing with a late-afternoon visit to the grand Tashichho Dzong ("Fortress of the Glorious Religion"), the seat of Bhutan's government and the central monastic body. Walk through the open courtyards to admire the traditional timber-and-masonry architecture built entirely without nails. In the evening, return to your hotel for dinner and relax, recharging for the upcoming days of your Punakha Festival Tour.

Day 3: Sunday, Feb 14, 2027, Scenic Drive to Phobjikha Valley via Dochula Pass & Gangtey Nature Trail Hike

Morning: Dochula Pass Crossing & Descent to Punakha

Depart Thimphu early for a scenic journey into central Bhutan. The drive climbs steadily through blue pine, oak, and rhododendron forests up to Dochula Pass (3,100 m / 10,170 ft). On a clear day, the pass commands an awe-inspiring 360-degree panorama of the snow-capped Eastern Himalayan range, framed by the 108 Druk Wangyal memorial chortens.

Take time to stroll among the stupas and enjoy a warm cup of tea before continuing the winding descent through subtropical vegetation into the warm, fertile valley of Punakha (1,250 m) for a relaxing lunch stop.

Afternoon: Ascent to Phobjikha Valley & Gangtey Nature Trail Hike

After lunch, continue the scenic drive eastward, ascending through lush forests and crossing Lawala Pass before dropping into the broad, glacial U-shaped valley of Phobjikha (Gangtey) at 2,900 m (9,510 ft).

Begin your exploration with a visit to the historic 17th-century Gangtey Monastery (Gangteng Goemba), the main seat of the Pema Lingpa Nyingma tradition in western Bhutan. From the monastery ridge, set out on foot along the renowned Gangtey Nature Trail (~1.5 to 2 hours). This gentle, downhill trail winds through flower-filled meadows, dense blue pine forests, and quiet pastoral hamlets, offering sweeping vistas across the vast wetland valley, the winter roosting ground of the revered Black-necked Cranes.

Evening: Hotel Transfer, Relaxation & Traditional Bukhari Warmth

At the trail's conclusion near the valley floor (Khewang Lhakhang area), meet your waiting vehicle and transfer to your hotel. Settle into the peaceful, rural ambiance of this high-altitude valley on your cultural journey. Relax by a traditional wood-burning stove (bukhari) before gathering for a hearty dinner featuring locally grown organic ingredients.

Day 3 Summary

Insider’s Pro-Tip: Phobjikha Valley sits significantly higher (~2,900 m) than Punakha and is noticeably cooler, especially once the sun sets. Keep a warm fleece or down jacket, a beanie, and gloves easily accessible in your daypack for the Dochula Pass stop and the afternoon hike in Gangtey.

Day 4: Monday, Feb15, 2027, Scenic Return Drive to Punakha, Rinchengang Village Walk, Wangdue Dzong & Chimi Lhakhang

Morning: Drive to Punakha Valley, Rinchengang Village Walk & Wangdue Phodrang Dzong

Bid farewell to the serene Phobjikha Valley and begin the winding descent back toward the warmer climes of the Punakha Valley. As you approach the Wangdue district, embark on a short, scenic walk across the river to Rinchengang Village. Perched high on a ridge, this historic clustered settlement of traditional mud-and-timber houses dates back to the 17th century, when master stonemasons from Cooch Behar were invited to build the local fortress.

Following the village walk, visit the majestic Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, dramatically situated atop a high ridge overlooking the confluence of the Punatsangchhu and Dangchhu rivers. Fully restored to its glorious grandeur following a devastating fire in 2012, the fortress stands as a testament to living Bhutanese craftsmanship. Continue the short drive to Punakha and check in to your hotel for lunch.

Afternoon: Pilgrimage Walk to Chimi Lhakhang (Fertility Temple)

After lunch and a brief rest, set out for a scenic pilgrimage walk to Chimi Lhakhang, the renowned 15th-century temple founded by the eccentric saint Drukpa Kunley (the "Divine Madman"). The gentle walking trail winds across lush terraced rice fields and through the vibrant village of Sopsokha, famous for its colorful, humorous murals painted on traditional homes. At the temple atop a round hillock, learn about the saint's unorthodox teachings and how pilgrims travel from across the world to receive blessings for fertility and children.

Evening: Sunset Valley Views & Relaxation

Return to the hillside resort in the late afternoon. Spend a relaxed evening taking in the panoramic vistas over the Punakha Valley and meandering river below from the hotel terrace. Enjoy dinner featuring fresh organic produce from the fertile valley basin before settling in for the night.

Day 4 Summary

Altitude: Phobjikha: 2,900 m (9,510 ft)  Punakha: 1,250 m (4,100 ft)Travel Distance: Approx. 75 km (47 miles)Time Involved: ~2.5–3 hours driving time + 1.5–2 hours total walking/sightseeingKey Attractions & Activities: Scenic mountain descent, Rinchengang traditional stone-mason village walk, Wangdue Phodrang Dzong visit, Chimi Lhakhang (Divine Madman temple) pilgrimage walk through Sopsokha villageMeals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerOvernight: Zingkham Resort (or similar)

Insider’s Pro-Tip: The village of Sopsokha and Chimi Lhakhang are adorned with traditional phallus paintings and wooden symbols representing protection and spiritual fertility. Understanding the esoteric background of Drukpa Kunley beforehand helps visitors appreciate the unique cultural context and deep reverence locals hold for this sacred site.

Day 5: Tuesday, Feb 16, 2027, First Day of Punakha Tshechu Festival at Punakha Dzong (February 16, 2027)

Morning: Immersion in the Sacred Opening Ceremonies of Punakha Tshechu

Rise early for a highlight of this 10-Day Punakha Tshechu Festival Tour: the opening day of the sacred Punakha Tshechu inside the majestic Punakha Dzong (Pungtang Dechen Photrang Dzong, "The Palace of Great Bliss"). Built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal at the scenic confluence of the Pho Chhu (father) and Mo Chhu (mother) rivers, this historic fortress serves as the winter seat of the Chief Abbot (Je Khenpo) and the central monastic body.

Step across the traditional wooden cantilever bridge and enter the grand, whitewashed courtyard. Join hundreds of local Bhutanese pilgrims dressed in their finest, vibrant handwoven silk ghos and kiras. In the morning session, witness the invocation ceremonies, melodic monastic horns (dungchen), cymbals, and sacred opening mask dances (Cham) performed by lamas and monks to purify negative energies and invoke blessings for the kingdom.

Afternoon: Cham Mask Dances, Folk Performances & Atsara Clown Humor

Following a hot lunch, return to the courtyard for the vibrant afternoon session of the Punakha Festival Tour. Watch as monks in elaborate, billowing silk robes and fierce animal, deity, and wrathful-figure masks perform ancient spiritual choreographies that reenact Buddhist legends and historical events.

Throughout the performances, keep an eye out for the Atsaras, traditional court jesters and spiritual clowns with wooden red masks. Providing comic relief and engaging with the audience, their lighthearted antics also hold a deep spiritual purpose: mimicking worldly delusions to dispel ego and ward off negative spirits.

Evening: Sunset at the Rivers' Confluence & Peaceful Evening

As the first day’s festival rituals conclude in the late afternoon, take a relaxed stroll along the riverbanks surrounding the fortress, capturing photos of the dzong illuminated by the golden rays of the setting sun. Return to your hillside resort for dinner and enjoy a restful evening overlooking the tranquil valley.

Day 5 Summary

Altitude: Punakha Valley: 1,250 m (4,100 ft)Travel Distance: Approx. 15 km (9 miles) round-trip local transferTime Involved: Full-day cultural festival attendance (~5–6 hours at the Dzong)Key Attractions & Activities: Punakha Dzong interior courtyard, Punakha Tshechu Day 1 opening rituals, sacred Cham mask dances, Atsara clown performances, traditional Bhutanese cultural interaction, Pho Chhu & Mo Chhu confluenceMeals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerOvernight: Zingkham Resort (or similar)

Insider’s Pro-Tip: Festival Etiquette & Photography, The Punakha Tshechu is a deeply sacred religious observance, not merely a spectator show. Dress smartly with shoulders and legs fully covered. When taking close-up portraits of locals in their festive attire, always ask politely first, a friendly smile and a gesture toward your camera usually receive a warm, welcoming nod.

Day 6: Wednesday, Feb 17, 2027 – Morning Punakha Tshechu Celebrations & Afternoon Hike to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten

Morning: Continued Festival Pageantry at Punakha Dzong

Return to the grand courtyard of Punakha Dzong for the exhilarating second morning of the Punakha Tshechu. Morning sessions on this day showcase some of the most dynamic and spiritually significant mask dances (Cham), including the dance of the stag and hounds (Shawa Shachi) or the protective deities, performed to the steady rhythm of drums, cymbals, and long horns.

Take this opportunity to engage with local families who have traveled from remote villages across the valley, admiring their intricate hand-woven textiles and sharing in the joyous communal spirit of the Punakha Festival. After the morning dances conclude, break for a delicious lunch at a riverside restaurant.

Afternoon: Scenic Countryside Hike to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten

Following lunch, take a short drive north of the dzong to the suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu river to begin a leisurely 2- to 3-hour round-trip hike up to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten. Built by the Queen Mother to promote peace, stability, and harmony throughout the world, this majestic four-story pagoda-style temple stands as one of the finest examples of modern Bhutanese artistic craftsmanship.

The trail ascends gently through terraced emerald-green rice paddies and fragrant pine groves. Step inside each level to admire the intricate wrathful deity sculptures and esoteric Buddhist murals. Finally, step out onto the open top terrace for a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the winding Mo Chhu river, pastoral hamlets, and the surrounding mountain ridges.

Evening: Sunset Over the Valley & Leisure

Descend back through the countryside to meet your vehicle and transfer back to the resort. Enjoy a relaxing evening taking in the sunset colors over the Punakha Valley from the terrace before sitting down for dinner.

Day 6 Summary

Altitude: Punakha Valley: 1,250 m (4,100 ft) / Khamsum Yuelley Chorten: ~1,500 m (4,920 ft)Travel Distance: Approx. 20 km (12 miles) round-trip local drivingTime Involved: ~3 hours morning festival attendance + 2–3 hours afternoon hike & sightseeingKey Attractions & Activities: Punakha Tshechu Day 2 morning Cham dances & festival celebrations, Mo Chhu suspension bridge crossing, scenic countryside hike through rice terraces, Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten temple & rooftop viewpointMeals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerOvernight: Zingkham Resort (or similar)

Insider’s Pro-Tip: Don't stop at the ground floor shrines of Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten. Climb the narrow wooden staircases all the way to the top open-air balcony, it offers arguably the single best photographic vantage point of the entire upper Punakha Valley and the meandering Mo Chhu river.

Day 7: Thursday, Feb 18, 2027 – Final Day of Punakha Tshechu (Thongdrel Ceremony) & Scenic Drive to Paro (February 18, 2027)

Morning: Sacred Thongdrel Unveiling & Blessings at Punakha Dzong

Rise in the pre-dawn hours for the spiritual zenith of the Punakha Tshechu: the unfurling of the sacred Thongdrel (giant silk appliqué tapestry) inside the grand courtyard of Punakha Dzong Displayed only on the final morning of the festival before sunrise strikes its delicate threads, viewing this towering holy scroll of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) and Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal is believed to cleanse a lifetime of negative karma through sight alone (Thongdrel literally translates to "liberation upon seeing").

Join thousands of Bhutanese devotees lined up in the crisp morning air to receive blessings, offer white silk scarves (khaddar), and witness the concluding monastic prayers. After the scroll is respectfully rolled back before mid-morning, return to your resort for a hearty breakfast and check out.

Afternoon: Scenic Drive Across Dochula Pass to Paro Valley

Depart Punakha and retrace your scenic route westward across the mountains toward Paro (~3.5 to 4 hours). Climb back up to Dochula Pass (3,100 m) for another opportunity to view the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens and the snow-capped Himalayan horizon over a warm lunch or refreshment break.

Continue your descent past the Chhuzom river confluence and follow the winding Pa Chhu river into the picturesque Paro Valley. Upon arrival, check in to the hilltop Khangkhu Resort, which commands sweeping, postcard-worthy views over Paro's emerald valley floor, traditional farmsteads, and the historic Rinpung Dzong.

Evening: Relaxation with Hilltop Valley Views

Spend a leisurely evening relaxing on the resort grounds or enjoying a quiet tea on the balcony overlooking the scenic valley below. Savor a delicious dinner featuring local specialties, resting up for the upcoming cultural excursions and hikes on this journey.

Day 7 Summary

Insider’s Pro-Tip: Early Wake-Up & Warm Layers for Thongdrel,  The Thongdrel is unveiled in the dark before dawn (~5:30 AM to 6:00 AM) and rolled back shortly after sunrise to prevent sunlight from damaging the ancient silk embroidery. Dress in warm thermal layers, gloves, and a fleece jacket, as the stone courtyard along the riverbanks is very chilly before the sun crests the ridges.

Day 8: Friday, Feb 19, 2027 –Chele La Pass Excursion & Downhill Nature Hike to Kila Nunnery

Morning: Drive to Chele La Pass & High Alpine Panoramas

Depart your hotel after breakfast for an exhilarating mountain drive up to Chele La Pass (3,988 m / 13,084 ft), the highest motorable mountain pass in Bhutan. The road climbs steadily through dense forests of blue pine, silver fir, and rhododendron, opening up to high alpine meadows adorned with thousands of fluttering prayer flags (lungdar). On clear days, the pass rewards travelers with spectacular views of Mt. Jomolhari (7,326 m) and Jichu Drake, dividing the picturesque valleys of Paro and Haa.

Afternoon: Scenic Downhill Ridge Hike to Kila Nunnery (Chele La Gompa)

From the pass, set out on a scenic downhill hike through ancient fir forests and rhododendron glades toward Kila Nunnery (Kila Goemba) (~1.5 to 2 hours). Established in the 9th century as a meditation retreat, this serene sanctuary is the oldest nunnery in Bhutan, clinging dramatically to a vertical rocky cliff face.

Tour the peaceful temple shrines, learn about the contemplative lives of the resident Buddhist nuns (anim), and soak in the tranquil mountain atmosphere. After your visit, descend the short trail down to the secondary road where your driver awaits to transfer you back down to Paro for a late lunch.

Evening: Free Time in Paro & Relaxing Dinner

Return to Khangkhu Resort in the late afternoon to unwind and rest your legs in preparation for the upcoming Tiger's Nest hike. Spend the evening enjoying the peaceful resort gardens or watching the sunset over the valley before gathering for dinner.

Day 8 Summary

Insider’s Pro-Tip: High Altitude & Wind Protection,  At nearly 4,000 meters, Chele La Pass is frequently breezy and significantly colder than the Paro valley floor. Dress in warm, easily removable windproof layers, a warm hat, and gloves.

Day 9: Saturday, Feb 20, 2027 – Iconic Pilgrimage Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang)

Morning: Pilgrimage Ascent to Paro Taktsang

Fuel up with an early breakfast for the crown jewel of your journey in Bhutan: the pilgrimage hike to Paro Taktsang (the "Tiger’s Nest" Monastery). Perched dramatically on a sheer granite cliff face 900 meters (3,000 ft) above the Paro Valley floor, this sacred sanctuary marks the cave where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) flew on the back of a tigress in the 8th century to meditate and subjugate local spirits.

Begin the hike from the trailhead at the valley base, ascending through fragrant blue pine, blue oak, and moss-draped rhododendron woods. Reach the mid-way wooden cafeteria for a welcome tea break and your first close-up view of the golden-roofed shrines clinging to the vertical precipice. Continue upward along the ridge, past fluttering prayer flags, and descend the stone steps past a roaring waterfall before crossing the gorge to enter the sacred monastery complex.

Afternoon: Shrine Explorations, Descent & Kyichu Lhakhang

Spend time exploring the interior chapels of Taktsang, including the cave where Guru Padmasambhava meditated and the shrine of the wrathful deity Dorje Drolo. Take in the staggering vertical views down into the emerald valley below.

Begin your descent back to the cafeteria for a hot lunch, then continue down to the base to meet your vehicle. On the drive back to town, stop at Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred 7th-century temples, built by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo to pin down a giant demoness across the Himalayas.

Evening: Farewell Dinner & Celebration

Return to Khangkhu Resort in the late afternoon. You may choose to soothe your hiking muscles with an optional traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath (Dotsho). Gather in the evening for a festive farewell dinner with your guide and driver, celebrating the conclusion of your cultural Punakha

Tshechu Festival Tour.

Insider’s Pro-Tip: Early Trailhead Start, Start the ascent by 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM. Hiking in the cool morning shade keeps the uphill climb comfortable, avoids mid-day crowds, and gives you quiet time inside the inner shrine rooms before large tour groups arrive.

Day 10: Sunday, Feb 21, 2027, Farewell to Bhutan & Onward Departure

Morning: Final Breakfast, Airport Transfer & Tashi Delek Departure

Enjoy a final breakfast at your resort while soaking in the morning vistas of the peaceful Paro Valley. Depending on your flight schedule, take some last-minute photos or enjoy a quiet moment reflecting on the memories created throughout your 10 Day Punakha Tshechu Tour.
