Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Bhutan

Kuzu Zangpo la! Welcome to Bhutan

Your 10-DayDagala Trek adventure begins with a spectacular flight into Paro, offering your first glimpse of Bhutan’s dramatic Himalayan landscape. As the aircraft descends through forested mountains into the narrow Paro Valley, enjoy sweeping views of rugged ridgelines, traditional villages, and terraced fields.

After completing immigration and customs formalities at Paro International Airport, meet your private Bhutanese guide and driver, who will welcome you with a traditional white silk scarf (khada).

From the airport, take a short drive to the Paro Airport Bird’s Eye Viewpoint, where you can look across the valley toward the runway and surrounding mountains. It is an excellent introduction to Paro’s distinctive landscape and the dramatic setting of Bhutan’s international airport.

Afternoon: Local Cuisine & Historic Landmarks

Enjoy a traditional Bhutanese lunch in Paro before beginning a relaxed afternoon of sightseeing. Today is intentionally kept at an easy pace, allowing you to settle into your new surroundings before the more active days ahead.

Visit two of Paro Valley’s most important cultural landmarks:

National Museum (Ta Dzong): Housed in a historic watchtower above Paro Dzong, the National Museum introduces you to Bhutan’s rich cultural and artistic heritage through collections of traditional art, sacred objects, textiles, weapons, natural history exhibits, and historical artifacts.

Rinpung Dzong: Continue downhill to impressive Rinpung Dzong, traditionally translated as the “Fortress of the Heap of Jewels.” Admire its massive whitewashed walls, intricate woodwork, courtyards, and traditional architecture. The dzong continues to serve both administrative and monastic functions.

Evening: Settle In & Prepare for the Trek

After sightseeing, transfer to your hotel and enjoy time to relax after your international journey. Depending on the timing and conditions, you may also enjoy views of Rinpung Dzong illuminated in the evening against the surrounding hills.

Your guide will review the days ahead and help you make any final preparations for the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek, including your trekking gear, daypack, clothing layers, and other essentials.

Enjoy dinner and a comfortable night in Paro as you begin adjusting to Bhutan’s mountain environment before continuing your adventure.

Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner

Overnight: Khangkhu Resort or similar mid-range boutique hotel

Day 2: Hike the Takstang Monastery-a.k.a. Tiger's Nest

Morning to Afternoon: Pilgrimage to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest)

Today brings one of Bhutan’s most iconic experiences and an excellent acclimatization hike before your Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek begins, the rewarding climb to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest).

After an early breakfast, drive a short distance from your hotel to the trailhead in the upper Paro Valley. From here, begin a steady ascent through beautiful blue pine, oak, and rhododendron forest, passing fluttering prayer flags and traditional water-powered prayer wheels along the way.

The Ascent: Follow the well-established mountain trail gradually uphill through the forest. The sustained climb provides an excellent opportunity to stretch your legs, become accustomed to walking at altitude, and prepare for the trekking days ahead.

Midway Teahouse: Around halfway up, stop at the ridge-side cafeteria for tea and your first dramatic view of Tiger’s Nest clinging to the sheer cliff face across the valley.

The Tiger’s Nest Viewpoint: Continue uphill to the famous viewpoint overlooking the monastery. From here, descend a series of stone steps into the gorge, passing a waterfall before climbing the final steps into the sacred complex.

Taktsang Monastery: Explore this extraordinary pilgrimage site, dramatically positioned approximately 900 m (2,950 ft) above the Paro Valley. According to Bhutanese Buddhist tradition, Guru Rinpoche flew to this location on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave here during the 8th century. The present monastery complex was established in the late 17th century.

Return Journey: After visiting the temples and shrines, retrace your route downhill. Stop for lunch along the way before continuing to the trailhead, where your vehicle will be waiting for the return drive to Paro.

Late Afternoon & Evening: Optional Cultural Exploration

Depending on your walking pace, energy level, and available time after the Tiger’s Nest hike, continue exploring Paro Valley or return directly to your hotel for a well-earned rest.

If time and energy permit, visit one or both of these historic sites:

Drukgyel Dzong: Visit this historic fortress in the upper Paro Valley, originally constructed in the 17th century to commemorate Bhutanese victories against Tibetan invasions. On a clear day, the surrounding area may offer views toward snowcapped Mount Jomolhari (7,326 m / 24,035 ft).

Kyichu Lhakhang: Visit one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred Buddhist temples, traditionally believed to have been founded in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. Its peaceful courtyards, ancient shrines, prayer wheels, and spiritual atmosphere provide a gentle conclusion to the day.

Return to your hotel in Paro for dinner and rest. Today’s sustained climb to Tiger’s Nest provides valuable acclimatization and a useful physical warm-up before beginning the higher-altitude stages of the Dagala Trek.

Day 3: The Dagala Thousands Lake Trek Begins Today

The Dagala Trek officially begins today as you leave Paro behind and travel to Genekha, the traditional starting point of this spectacular high-altitude journey. After meeting your trekking crew and making final preparations at the trailhead, set out on foot through forests, mountain streams, and gradually rising alpine pastures toward your first wilderness camp at Gur.

Morning: Drive to Genekha & the Dagala Trek Trailhead

After breakfast, depart Paro and drive toward Genekha (also spelled Gyenekha), a peaceful rural settlement surrounded by terraced farmland and forested hills. The village is particularly known for the wild matsutake mushrooms that grow in the surrounding forests during the mushroom season.

As the road climbs into the countryside, the busy valley gradually gives way to traditional farmhouses, cultivated fields, and increasingly quiet mountain scenery.

Upon reaching the trailhead near Genekha, meet your trekking crew and make the final preparations for the journey ahead. From here, your Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek leaves the road behind and enters the remote mountain landscape on foot.

Afternoon: Trek from Genekha to Gur

Begin with a gentle descent toward a mountain stream before crossing a wooden footbridge and starting the day's main ascent.

The trail climbs steadily through beautiful forests of blue pine, oak, rhododendron, and other Himalayan vegetation. Depending on the season, flowering rhododendrons and mountain wildflowers add splashes of color to the forested slopes.

After approximately two hours of climbing, reach a large natural rock platform at around 3,300 m (10,827 ft). Pause here to rest and enjoy expansive views back across the Genekha Valley, where terraced fields and scattered settlements spread across the landscape below.

Continue gradually uphill as the dense forest begins to thin and the surroundings transition into more open highland pasture. The increasingly expansive landscape offers your first real sense of entering the remote mountain country for which the Dagala region is known.

Late Afternoon: Arrive at Gur Camp

By late afternoon, arrive at Gur, a peaceful meadow surrounded by high-altitude grazing land. Yaks may be seen grazing across the surrounding slopes, offering your first glimpse into the traditional pastoral life of Bhutan's highlands.

Your trekking crew will establish camp while you settle into your first evening in the mountains. Enjoy a hot meal prepared by the camp cook and take time to relax amid the quiet alpine surroundings.

Tonight marks your first night under canvas on the Dagala Trek, with higher ridges, remote yak pastures, and the mountain lakes of the Dagala range still ahead.

Day 4: Trekking Over the Pagalabtsa Pass to Labatma & Sacred Uthso Tsho

Today is one of the most dramatic high-altitude stages of the Dagala Trek, taking you from the meadows of Gur across increasingly open alpine terrain toward Labatama. The trail climbs steadily through rhododendron, birch, mountain pastures, and exposed ridgelines before reaching the high country surrounding the Dagala lakes.

Morning: Ridge Ascent & High Alpine Meadows

Wake to the quiet surroundings of Gur as the first morning light spreads across the surrounding meadows. After breakfast at camp, begin a sustained ascent toward the higher ridges of the Dagala range.

The trail initially passes through scattered birch and rhododendron before gradually emerging above the denser vegetation into expansive alpine meadows. Small mountain streams weave through the grasslands, while seasonal wildflowers add color to the increasingly rugged landscape.

As you gain altitude, take a slow and steady pace, allowing your body time to adjust to the thinner mountain air. Looking back, the valleys and forested ridges of the previous day's route gradually fall away below.

Continue across the open highlands toward Pagalabtsa Pass, where prayer flags and stone cairns mark your arrival in the higher reaches of the trek.

Afternoon: Pagalabtsa Pass & Journey to Labatama

Reach Pagalabtsa Pass at approximately 4,250 m (13,943 ft), where colorful prayer flags flutter above the surrounding alpine landscape.

On a clear day, the elevated ridges can offer far-reaching views toward the snow-covered Himalayan ranges. Depending on visibility and weather conditions, distant peaks may appear along the horizon while the rolling Dagala highlands extend across the foreground.

After taking time to enjoy the views, descend from the pass into broad yak-grazing country. Traditional herders use these remote highland pastures seasonally, and you may encounter grazing yak herds or traditional yak-hair shelters along the route.

Continue through the valley, following mountain streams and undulating trails as you make your way deeper into the remote Dagala highlands.

Late Afternoon: Arrive at Labatama

The final section leads toward Labatama (also spelled Labathamba), an isolated alpine basin surrounded by high ridges and yak pastures.

Arrive at your wilderness campsite and settle in while the trekking crew prepares your camp and evening meal. At around 4,300 m (14,108 ft), tonight represents a significant increase in sleeping altitude from Gur, so the remainder of the afternoon and evening should be spent resting, staying hydrated, and allowing your body to acclimatize.

Labatama serves as an important base for exploring the beautiful alpine lakes that give the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek its evocative name. With the higher mountains now surrounding you, you have reached the heart of the Dagala wilderness.

Day 4 Summary

Day 5: Beyond Dala Tsho to the Meadow Oasis of Panka

Today brings you into some of the highest terrain of the Dagala Trek, with a spectacular ridge walk above the alpine lakes followed by a descent through remote yak-grazing country toward Panka. With favorable weather and clear skies, the elevated ridges offer expansive Himalayan views and some of the most memorable mountain scenery of the journey.

Morning: Dala Tsho Ridge & High-Mountain Panorama

After breakfast at Labatama, leave camp and begin climbing toward the ridge above Dala Tsho, one of the beautiful alpine lakes scattered throughout the Dagala highlands.

The trail follows the western side of the lake before gradually ascending across open alpine terrain toward a high saddle. With little vegetation at this elevation, the landscape becomes increasingly expansive, with mountain lakes, rolling ridges, and distant snow-covered peaks appearing across the horizon.

Reach the high saddle at approximately 4,520 m (14,829 ft), one of the highest points reached on the standard Dagala Trek.

On a clear day, this elevated viewpoint can reveal an impressive panorama of Bhutan’s Himalayan peaks, including Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, Masang Gang, and Gangche Ta, along with other snow-covered summits stretching across the northern horizon.

Take time at the saddle to rest, photograph the mountain scenery, and appreciate the remarkable scale of the Dagala highlands before beginning your descent.

For trekkers with sufficient energy, favorable weather, and approval from the guide, there may be an opportunity for an optional ascent to a nearby high point of approximately 4,720 m (15,486 ft). This additional climb should only be attempted when trail, weather, and individual acclimatization conditions are suitable.

Afternoon: Descend Through Yak Country to Panka

From the high ridge, begin descending through broad alpine pastures toward the valley below. Pass traditional stone shelters used by yak herders and continue through an isolated landscape shaped by seasonal grazing and mountain streams.

The trail eventually approaches the Doccha Chhu, following the contours of the valley through a succession of gentle ascents and descents.

Keep watch for wildlife along the way. Yaks and mountain horses commonly graze throughout these high pastures, while birdlife may include the colorful Himalayan monal, one of the most distinctive birds of the Himalayan highlands.

As you lose altitude, the terrain gradually becomes gentler and the day's high ridges recede behind you.

Late Afternoon: Arrive at Panka Camp

By late afternoon, arrive at Panka (also spelled Pankha), where your trekking crew establishes camp amid the surrounding mountain landscape.

At approximately 4,000 m (13,123 ft), Panka provides a lower sleeping elevation than Labatama after today's high-ridge crossing. Settle into camp, enjoy a hot evening meal, and rest after another rewarding day in the heart of the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek.

Day 6: Over High Crests to the Sacred Heights of Talakha

Today marks your final full day on the Dagala Trek, combining an exhilarating high-ridge walk with a long descent from the open alpine country into the forests above Thimphu. After climbing to approximately 4,270 m (14,009 ft), follow the mountain crest for expansive views before descending through rhododendron and conifer forests to your final wilderness camp near Talakha Monastery.

Morning: High-Ridge Ascent & Panoramic Mountain Views

After breakfast at Panka, leave camp and begin a gradual ascent across the rolling highlands of the Dagala range.

The trail climbs around open mountain slopes and through low alpine vegetation before reaching a pass at approximately 4,000 m (13,123 ft). Continue along the undulating ridge as the route rises toward the day's highest point at approximately 4,270 m (14,009 ft).

From the high ridge, enjoy sweeping views across the surrounding Dagala mountains. On a clear day, distant snow-covered Himalayan peaks rise along the northern horizon, while the increasingly lower valleys ahead signal your gradual return from the remote high country.

Pause along the ridge to take in the expansive landscape before beginning the long descent toward Talakha.

Afternoon: Descend Through Rhododendron & Conifer Forests

Leaving the exposed ridge behind, begin a sustained descent as the landscape changes noticeably with the loss of altitude.

Open alpine terrain gradually gives way to rhododendron, spruce, pine, and other mountain forest. The trail winds steadily downhill through increasingly dense vegetation, offering a striking contrast to the exposed ridges and alpine pastures of the previous several days.

Take your time on the prolonged descent, particularly on steeper or uneven sections of trail. Although most of the afternoon is downhill, the substantial elevation loss can be demanding on the knees and legs.

As you approach Talakha, occasional openings in the forest reveal increasingly expansive views toward the populated valleys below.

Late Afternoon: Arrive at Talakha Monastery Camp

By late afternoon, arrive near Talakha Monastery, situated on a forested ridge overlooking the surrounding valleys.

Settle into your final wilderness campsite at approximately 3,080 m (10,105 ft). From the ridge, weather permitting, enjoy broad views toward Thimphu Valley in the distance as the evening light settles across the mountains.

Tonight is your final night under canvas on the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek. After several days among alpine lakes, yak pastures, remote mountain passes, and high ridges, enjoy a well-earned dinner with your trekking crew and the quieter surroundings of the forested mountains.

Tomorrow, you complete the final section of the trail and return to the road, bringing your Dagala trekking journey to a close.

Today marks the final stage of your Dagala Trek. After your last breakfast in camp, descend from the forested ridge near Talakha Monastery through peaceful woodlands, rural settlements, and farmland to the roadhead near Chamgang. Here, say farewell to your trekking crew before driving to Thimphu for a well-earned afternoon of rest and relaxation.

Morning: Final Forest Walk & Descent to Chamgang

Wake to the peaceful surroundings of Talakha and enjoy your final breakfast at camp. After packing up and saying goodbye to your wilderness campsite, begin the concluding walk of the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek.

The trail descends steadily through beautiful forests of blue pine, oak, rhododendron, and other temperate vegetation. After several days above the tree line and among open alpine pastures, the return to dense forest provides a noticeable change in scenery.

As you continue downhill, occasional openings between the trees reveal views toward the lower valleys. The landscape gradually becomes more cultivated, with traditional farmhouses, small settlements, agricultural fields, and village paths signaling your return to inhabited country.

Continue descending at a comfortable pace until you reach the roadhead near Chamgang, where your trek officially comes to an end.

Afternoon: Farewell to the Trekking Crew & Drive to Thimphu

At Chamgang, meet your transfer vehicle and take time to say farewell to the trekking crew who have accompanied and supported you throughout the journey.

From here, drive to Thimphu, leaving the mountain trails behind and returning to the comforts of Bhutan's capital.

Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy a well-earned hot shower and time to relax after several nights of wilderness camping. The remainder of the afternoon can be kept at leisure, allowing you to rest and recover from the trek.

Evening: Relax & Celebrate the Completion of the Dagala Trek

Enjoy a comfortable evening in Thimphu and reflect on the remarkable landscapes crossed over the past several days, from the forests above Genekha and high yak pastures to remote alpine lakes, mountain passes, exposed ridges, and the final descent through the forests of Talakha.

After several days in the remote mountains on the Dagala Trek, today offers a fascinating change of pace as you explore Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. Visit some of the city’s most important cultural and spiritual landmarks, experience everyday Bhutanese life, and enjoy a scenic afternoon hike through the forested hills above the valley.

Morning: Buddha Dordenma, Memorial Chorten & Simply Bhutan

After breakfast, begin your exploration of Thimphu with a visit to the impressive Buddha Dordenma, one of the capital’s most recognizable landmarks.

Perched high above the Thimphu Valley at Kuenselphodrang, the massive gilded statue of Shakyamuni Buddha commands panoramic views across the city and surrounding forested mountains. Walk around the monument, observe pilgrims circumambulating the complex, and enjoy the sweeping valley views from this elevated setting.

Continue to the National Memorial Chorten, an important center of daily religious life in Thimphu. Join local residents and pilgrims as they walk clockwise around the whitewashed stupa, spin prayer wheels, recite mantras, and make their morning devotions.

Next, visit Simply Bhutan, an interactive living museum that provides an engaging introduction to traditional Bhutanese culture. Explore displays of rural architecture, household objects, traditional dress, crafts, foodways, and other aspects of everyday Bhutanese life.

Late Morning: Farmers' Market & Traditional Archery

If your visit falls during the weekend and the market is operating, spend some time exploring the Centenary Farmers' Market, where farmers and vendors gather with seasonal vegetables, fruits, spices, dried foods, local produce, and other goods.

Continue toward the Changlimithang area to experience Bhutan’s national sport, archery. When matches or practice sessions are underway, watch archers compete at remarkable distances while teammates celebrate successful shots with traditional songs, dances, and good-natured exchanges.

These local experiences provide an enjoyable glimpse into contemporary Bhutanese life beyond the country’s monasteries and monuments.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Thimphu before continuing into the forested hills above the city.

Afternoon: Takin Preserve & Wangditse–Dechen Phodrang Hike

After lunch, drive uphill to the Motithang Takin Preserve to see Bhutan’s unusual national animal, the takin. The preserve provides an opportunity to observe these distinctive animals in a protected forest environment and learn about their connection with Bhutanese folklore.

From the upper Thimphu area, continue toward the trailhead for an afternoon walk through peaceful pine forest.

Follow the forest trail toward Wangditse Goemba, enjoying a quieter side of the capital away from the city streets. Prayer flags, pine-covered slopes, and occasional openings overlooking the Thimphu Valley make this a particularly pleasant walk.

Visit Wangditse Goemba, a small monastery occupying a tranquil setting on the forested ridge, before continuing along the trail toward Dechen Phodrang.

The route winds gradually through the forest before descending toward Dechen Phodrang Monastery, an important monastic school overlooking the northern end of Thimphu. Your vehicle will meet you near the end of the walk.

Late Afternoon: Tashichho Dzong

Conclude your sightseeing with a visit to magnificent Tashichho Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most important administrative and religious landmarks.

Set beside the Wang Chhu River, the imposing fortress-monastery is distinguished by massive whitewashed walls, richly decorated timberwork, golden roofs, and spacious courtyards. It houses important government offices and serves as the summer seat of Bhutan’s central monastic body.

When visitor access is permitted, explore the impressive courtyard and admire the intricate traditional architecture as the late-afternoon light settles across the dzong and surrounding mountains.

Return to your hotel after a rewarding day combining Bhutanese spirituality, traditional culture, local life, wildlife, and a gentle forest hike.

Morning: Tamchog Lhakhang & Journey Toward Paro

After breakfast, bid farewell to Thimphu and begin the scenic drive toward Paro, following the winding highway through forested mountains and river valleys.

Stop at Tamchog Lhakhang, located across the river from the main highway. The temple is associated with Thangtong Gyalpo, the renowned 15th-century Tibetan Buddhist master, engineer, and bridge builder famous throughout the Himalayan region for constructing iron chain suspension bridges.

Cross the traditional-style iron chain bridge and walk up toward the temple, enjoying views of the river and surrounding hills before returning to your vehicle and continuing toward Paro.

Late Morning: Kila Goemba Nunnery

Continue toward the high country below Chele La Pass for a detour to Kila Goemba, a secluded Buddhist nunnery dramatically situated against a forested mountainside.

From the road, follow the mountain trail through peaceful forest toward the nunnery. Prayer flags flutter among the trees as you approach the cluster of temples and residences built into the steep slope.

Spend time exploring the serene surroundings and learning about the spiritual life of the resident nuns. The isolated mountain setting, forested slopes, and views across the surrounding valleys make Kila Goemba one of the most atmospheric religious retreats in the Paro region.

After the visit, return to your vehicle and descend toward Paro Valley.

Afternoon: Dzongdrakha Monastery & Sacred Paro Valley

Continue to Dzongdrakha Monastery, a remarkable collection of temples built against the cliffs above the western side of Paro Valley.

Sometimes described as a smaller counterpart to Tiger’s Nest because of its dramatic cliffside setting, Dzongdrakha offers a quieter and more intimate experience. Explore the sacred complex while enjoying beautiful views across traditional villages, terraced fields, and the broad Paro Valley below.

Afterward, descend into Paro and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

Continue your cultural exploration with visits to two important landmarks:

Kyichu Lhakhang: Visit one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred Buddhist temples, traditionally believed to have been established in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. Walk through its peaceful courtyards, turn the prayer wheels, and experience the contemplative atmosphere of this ancient sanctuary.

Drukgyel Dzong: Continue into the upper Paro Valley to visit historic Drukgyel Dzong, originally constructed in the 17th century to commemorate Bhutanese victories over Tibetan invasions. On a clear day, the surrounding valley may offer impressive views toward snowcapped Mount Jomolhari (7,326 m / 24,035 ft).

After sightseeing, transfer to your hotel and enjoy some time to relax.

Evening: Optional Traditional Hot Stone Bath

After your Dagala Trek and several active days exploring Bhutan, consider ending the journey with a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath (Dotsho) at a local farmhouse.

The bath is traditionally prepared by heating river stones over a fire and placing them into a separate chamber connected to a wooden bathing trough, gradually warming the water. Local herbs may also be added according to the farmhouse tradition.

Soak in the warm water and relax tired muscles while enjoying the peaceful surroundings of the Paro countryside, a fitting conclusion to your final full day in Bhutan.

Afterward, enjoy your final dinner in Bhutan and spend a comfortable night in Paro.
