Trip Introduction

A short loop through western Bhutan: Paro, Thimphu and Punakha, with Dochula Pass in between. Walk through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, visit the quiet cliffside Dzongdrakha Monastery, then hike to Taktsang Monastery, the Tiger's Nest, at 3,120 meters. The last afternoon brings Drukgyel Dzong, Kyichu Lhakhang and a traditional farmhouse.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive in Paro & Drive to Thimphu

Morning: Arrive in Paro & Explore the Valley

Your flight to Bhutan may offer spectacular views of the Himalayas, including Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, and other renowned Himalayan peaks. As you approach Bhutan, you may also catch sight of the sacred peaks of Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drake.

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, clear immigration and customs before meeting your guide and driver. You will need to present your Visa Approval document, which we will email to you approximately three to four weeks before your trip. At Paro airport, the approval document will be verified, and the actual visa sticker will be placed in your passport.

After introductions, your guide will take you to a nearby viewpoint overlooking the Paro Valley. From here, enjoy sweeping views of terraced fields, traditional farmhouses, the Paro Chhu River, and the surrounding forested hills. You can also see the airport's single runway, framed dramatically by steep mountainsides. On clear days, Rinpung Dzong and the surrounding peaks add to this memorable introduction to Bhutan.

Next, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before visiting the National Museum of Bhutan. Housed in the historic Ta Dzong above the valley, the museum provides an excellent introduction to Bhutan's history, culture, art, and religion. Its collections include traditional textiles, manuscripts, murals, armor, crafts, utensils, and philatelic displays. The hilltop location also offers magnificent views across the Paro Valley, with Rinpung Dzong and the countryside spread out below.

Afternoon: Scenic Drive to Thimphu

After exploring Paro, begin the scenic one-hour drive to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital. Along the way, stop for a short walk and visit Tamchog Lhakhang, a historic temple associated with the renowned Tibetan Buddhist master and iron-bridge builder Thangthong Gyalpo. Known as a physician, teacher, engineer, and saint, Thangthong Gyalpo is believed to have built numerous iron bridges across Tibet and the Himalayas. The temple is traditionally maintained by his descendants.

Continue to Thimphu, where you will check into your hotel and have time to settle in. Later, enjoy a relaxed walking tour of the compact capital. Thimphu is famously known as the world's only national capital without traffic lights. Depending on time and interest, your walk may include the Memorial Chorten, built in memory of Bhutan's third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, along with other sights in the city center.

This gentle first day of your 6-Day Bhutan Cultural Tour introduces you to Bhutan's landscapes, Buddhist heritage, traditional architecture, and contemporary capital before the cultural exploration continues tomorrow.

Day 2 – Explore Thimphu: Culture, Heritage & Mountain Views

Morning: Thimphu's Cultural Highlights

Begin your day with a visit to the impressive Buddha Dordenma, a 51-meter-tall bronze statue overlooking the Thimphu Valley. Set high on a hill above the capital, the site offers expansive views across the valley and provides an introduction to Bhutan's Buddhist traditions.

Continue to the Memorial Chorten, one of Thimphu's most recognizable landmarks. Built in memory of Bhutan's third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the chorten is an important place of daily worship, with local residents often circumambulating the shrine while turning prayer wheels and reciting prayers.

Next, visit Simply Bhutan, a living museum that provides an engaging introduction to Bhutanese traditions and everyday life. Through traditional architecture, demonstrations, performances, and local customs, you will gain a glimpse into Bhutan's distinctive cultural heritage.

If your visit falls on a weekend, the morning may also include the Centenary Farmers' Market, where farmers and vendors from around the region gather to sell fresh produce, local foods, spices, and other products. Depending on the seasonal and sporting calendar, we may also stop at Changlimithang Stadium to watch a traditional Bhutanese archery tournament, Bhutan's national sport.

Afternoon: Takin Reserve, Wangditse Hike & Tashichho Dzong

After lunch, head to the Motithang Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan's unusual national animal, the takin. Located in a forested area above Thimphu, the preserve provides an opportunity to see these distinctive animals in a natural-looking mountain environment.

From here, continue to the trailhead for a scenic hike to Wangditse Goemba. The trail winds through pine and rhododendron forest and offers beautiful views across the Thimphu Valley. The hike is a rewarding way to experience Bhutan's natural landscape while visiting a less-crowded Buddhist site away from the city center.

Continue on foot toward Dechen Phodrang, a former monastic school located above Thimphu. The site combines Bhutanese Buddhist heritage with peaceful mountain surroundings and provides a fitting conclusion to the day's walking experience.

In the late afternoon, visit Tashichho Dzong, one of Bhutan's most important religious and administrative centers. The impressive complex is home to the offices of the King and central government during the summer months and serves as the summer residence of the central monastic body. Its whitewashed walls, traditional architecture, and riverside setting make it one of Thimphu's most striking landmarks.

Day 3 – Thimphu to Punakha: Dochula Pass & Punakha Valley

As part of your 6-Day Bhutan Cultural Tour, today takes you from the capital of Thimphu into the lush Punakha Valley. The journey crosses the spectacular Dochula Pass, with opportunities for panoramic Himalayan views and, in spring, colorful rhododendron blooms. The afternoon brings you closer to Bhutan's cultural heritage with visits to Punakha Dzong, the iconic suspension bridge, and a scenic village walk to Chimi Lhakhang.

Morning: Scenic Drive over Dochula Pass

After breakfast, leave Thimphu and travel east toward Punakha, crossing the spectacular Dochula Pass at approximately 3,100 m / 10,170 ft. On a clear day, the pass offers panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks, including some of Bhutan's highest mountains.

The hillside at Dochula is also home to the 108 Druk Wangyel Chortens, built in honor of Bhutan's armed forces. Take time to enjoy the mountain panorama and explore the peaceful surroundings before continuing toward the warmer, subtropical Punakha Valley.

If you are traveling in spring, a stop at Lamperi Botanical Park is especially worthwhile. The park is known for its collection of rhododendrons, which typically burst into bloom during the spring season, adding vibrant color to the forested landscape.

Continue downhill toward Punakha, where the climate becomes noticeably warmer and the landscape changes from high mountain forests to lush valleys, terraced fields, and subtropical vegetation.

Afternoon: Punakha Dzong & Chimi Lhakhang

After lunch at your hotel, visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan's most important and architecturally impressive fortresses. Built at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, the dzong has played a central role in Bhutan's religious and political history and remains the winter residence of the central monastic body.

From the dzong, continue to the famous Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of Bhutan's longest traditional suspension bridges. Spanning the Mo Chhu River, the bridge provides beautiful views of the river valley and surrounding mountains and is a memorable way to experience the landscape on foot.

Late in the afternoon, head into the countryside for a scenic hike toward Chimi Lhakhang, popularly known as Bhutan's Fertility Temple. The trail passes through picturesque villages and traditional farmhouses, with paths winding through rice paddies and the surrounding countryside. The relatively gentle walk provides an opportunity to experience rural Bhutan at a slower pace before reaching the temple, which is associated with the colorful Buddhist saint Drukpa Kunley, popularly known as the “Divine Madman.”

A Note About Punakha's Traditional Art

A little cultural heads-up: As you explore Punakha's villages and traditional homes, you will notice phallus symbols and phallus-shaped objects as a distinctive part of the local folk tradition. They are commonly painted on house walls and displayed around homes, shops, and temples, particularly in the Punakha Valley.

These symbols are associated with fertility, protection, and the teachings of Drukpa Kunley. While they may look surprising or amusing to visitors at first, they carry cultural and spiritual significance in Bhutan. So, don't be caught off guard when you encounter them, they are simply part of the unique cultural landscape of Punakha.

Day 4 – Punakha to Paro: Dochula Pass & Dzongdrakha Monastery

As your 6-Day Bhutan Tour continues, today takes you back from the warm Punakha Valley to the historic town of Paro. The scenic drive retraces the mountain route over Dochula Pass, followed by a short side excursion to Dzongdrakha Monastery, a peaceful cliffside temple complex often described as a miniature version of Tiger's Nest.

Morning: Return Journey via Dochula Pass

After breakfast, begin the scenic drive from Punakha toward Paro, retracing the mountain road through the changing landscapes of central and western Bhutan. As you climb toward Dochula Pass, the landscape transitions from the subtropical Punakha Valley to higher mountain forests.

Make a brief stop at Dochula Pass for another opportunity to photograph the 108 Druk Wangyel Chortens and, weather permitting, the panoramic Himalayan mountain range. Having visited the pass on your way to Punakha, the return journey offers a different perspective and often reveals new views as the weather and light change.

Continue toward Paro, enjoying the winding mountain roads and changing scenery along the way.

Afternoon: Dzongdrakha Monastery & Paro

A few miles before reaching Paro, take a short side excursion to Dzongdrakha Monastery, a remarkable collection of temples perched dramatically on a rocky cliff above the Paro Valley. Sometimes referred to as a “miniature Taktsang” or “Mini Tiger's Nest,” Dzongdrakha offers a quieter alternative to the more famous monastery you will visit tomorrow.

A short uphill walk leads to the monastery, passing through a peaceful landscape of pine trees and traditional countryside. Take time to explore the temple complex and enjoy the views across the Paro Valley before continuing to your hotel.

Arrive in Paro and check into Khangkhu Resort. The remainder of the afternoon can be enjoyed at leisure, giving you time to relax before tomorrow's more strenuous excursion to Tiger's Nest Monastery.

Day 5 – Tiger’s Nest Monastery & Paro Valley

The highlight of your 6-Day Bhutan Cultural Tour arrives today with a morning hike to Taktsang Monastery, popularly known as Tiger’s Nest. Perched dramatically on a cliff above the Paro Valley, this iconic monastery is Bhutan's most celebrated landmark. The afternoon continues with more cultural discoveries, including Drukgyel Dzong, Kyichu Lhakhang, and an authentic Bhutanese farmhouse experience.

Morning: Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery

After an early breakfast, drive to the trailhead for the hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest). The trail climbs steadily through pine forest, with prayer flags, mountain views, and occasional glimpses of the monastery appearing high on the cliffside.

The hike takes approximately 4–5 hours round trip, depending on pace and stops. Although the trail is well established, the sustained uphill climb and high elevation make this the most physically demanding activity of the tour. Take your time and enjoy the journey rather than treating it as a race.

Along the way, stop at the famous viewpoint overlooking Tiger's Nest before continuing toward the monastery itself. The complex consists of several temples built into and around the cliff, and its dramatic setting is deeply connected with Bhutan's Buddhist heritage and the legend of Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche).

After exploring the monastery, descend to the trailhead and return to Paro for lunch and some time to rest.

Afternoon: Drukgyel Dzong, Kyichu Lhakhang & Rural Bhutan

In the afternoon, drive toward the northern end of the Paro Valley to visit Drukgyel Dzong, a historic fortress built in the 17th century. Although largely in ruins following a fire, the dzong occupies a spectacular location with views toward Mount Jomolhari on clear days. Its dramatic setting and historical importance make it an excellent complement to the morning's visit to Tiger's Nest.

Continue to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest and most revered temples. The temple is traditionally believed to have been built in the 7th century by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo and is an important pilgrimage site.

Later, visit a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse for a glimpse into rural life and local architecture. Depending on availability and your interest, you may have the opportunity to experience a traditional hot-stone bath, a relaxing Bhutanese wellness tradition in which heated river stones are used to warm mineral-rich water.

Return to Paro in the late afternoon and enjoy a relaxing evening after your memorable Tiger's Nest excursion.

Day Profile

Altitude: Paro approximately 2,250 m / 7,382 ft → Tiger's Nest approximately 3,120 m / 10,236 ft

Driving Time: Approximately 1.5–2 hours, excluding sightseeing stops

Walking/Hiking: Approximately 4–5 hours; moderate to strenuous uphill hiking to Tiger's Nest

Overnight: Khangkhu Resort or similar
