Trip at a Glance

Trip Introduction

Built for travel agents who sell Mongolia, this is a working look at the routes, ger camps and logistics your clients would use, from Ulaanbaatar to the South Gobi and back across the central steppe to Kharkhorin. Hike Yolyn Am gorge, climb the Khongor Sand Dunes at sunset, walk the Flaming Cliffs at Bayanzag, and look for Przewalski's horses in Hustai National Park.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & First Impressions of Ulaanbaatar

Your Mongolia Travel Agent FAM adventure begins as you arrive in Ulaanbaatar, the nation’s vibrant capital. After clearing immigration and customs, you’ll be greeted at the arrival gate by your local guide and driver, your partners in discovering Mongolia’s culture, history, and tourism potential, followed by transfer to your hotel in the city (31.25 miles, 1 hour). You’ll have time to settle in, refresh, and prepare for your first look at Mongolia’s capital.

Your FAM exploration begins at the iconic Sukhbaatar Square. This central plaza is the symbolic heart of the city, anchored by the equestrian statue of Damdin Sükhbaatar, hero of Mongolia’s 1921 revolution. On the north side, in front of the Government Palace, stand the monumental statues of Chinggis Khaan, Ögedei Khaan, and Kublai Khaan, a striking backdrop for photos and a powerful first look at Mongolia’s imperial legacy.

Continue to the National Museum of Mongolia, an essential stop for travel professionals. Its exhibits trace the country’s story from ancient prehistory through the rise of the Mongol Empire, the Qing period, traditional nomadic culture, Tibetan Buddhist heritage, and Mongolia’s modern era. This overview provides valuable context for the destinations and experiences you’ll encounter throughout the FAM tour.

Your first day concludes with a welcome dinner, offering a chance to get to know your fellow participants and receive a trip briefing. This is also an excellent opportunity to ask questions and connect with the local manager and guide.

Day 2: Spiritual Mongolia, City Highlights & Cultural Evening

Your Mongolia FAM Tour continues with a deep dive into the country’s spiritual and cultural heritage. After breakfast, the group begins the day at Gandan Monastery, the most active and significant Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. As you walk through its peaceful courtyards, observe monks in prayer, and stand before the towering 26‑meter statue of Migjid Janraisig, your guide will explain how Buddhism shapes daily life, valuable insight for Travel Agent FAM participants seeking to better understand guest expectations and cultural nuances.

Following your monastery visit, explore several of Ulaanbaatar’s key landmarks. Depending on the day’s flow, highlights may include the Bogd Khaan Winter Palace Museum, home of Mongolia’s last theocratic ruler, or the Zaisan Memorial, offering sweeping views of the capital. These curated stops help travel professionals gain firsthand knowledge of the city’s most popular attractions and how they fit into future client itineraries.

In the late afternoon, return to the hotel to refresh before an evening of cultural immersion. Experience a Mongolian traditional performance, featuring throat singing, folk dance, contortion, and the evocative sounds of the horse‑head fiddle. This show is a signature highlight for many visitors and an essential component of any well‑designed Mongolia itinerary.

Your day concludes with a group dinner, providing another opportunity for Travel Agent FAM participants to connect, exchange insights, and continue building relationships with your local hosts.

Preparing for Tomorrow’s Flight to the South Gobi

As you will be flying to the South Gobi the following morning for a 3‑day field experience, you are encouraged to pack a separate small bag with essentials for the 3‑day South Gobi trip (comfortable clothing, layers, sun protection, personal items, chargers, etc.) to ensure easier travel and more comfort during transfers and activities. You can leave your main luggage at the hotel, where it will be securely stored.

Day 3: Flight to the South Gobi & Yolyn Am Gorge Exploration

(1.5 hours flight, approximately 2 hours driving).

Your Mongolia Travel Agent FAM Tour continues with an exciting transition from the capital to the dramatic landscapes of the South Gobi Desert. Depending on your flight time, enjoy an early breakfast at the hotel. If the schedule does not allow for a sit‑down meal, a packed breakfast will be provided for you to enjoy while waiting at the airport.

Transfer to the airport in time for your domestic flight to Dalanzadgad, the provincial center of the South Gobi (flight duration approx. 1 hour 30 minutes). Upon arrival, meet your experienced 4WD drivers, who will accompany the group throughout the Gobi portion of the FAM tour.

Begin your overland journey to your Ger Camp, where you will check in and have time to settle into your traditional Mongolian accommodation. After lunch at the camp, set out for an afternoon excursion to Yolyn Am (Vulture’s Gorge), located within the Gurvan Saikhan National Park. This deep, narrow canyon is known for its dramatic rock formations, cool microclimate, and occasional patches of year‑round ice. Enjoy a scenic hike through the gorge, taking in the wildlife, fresh mountain air, and stunning contrasts of the Gobi landscape.

For those interested, optional horse riding is available in the area, an excellent opportunity for FAM participants to experience an activity often requested by travelers.

Return to the ger camp for dinner and overnight stay, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the desert.

Day 4: Journey to the Majestic Khongor Sand Dunes

Today, your Mongolia Travel Agent FAM Tour takes you deeper into the heart of the South Gobi as you travel to one of its most iconic natural wonders, the Khongor Sand Dunes, often called the Singing Dunes. Stretching for more than 180 km (112.5 miles), this vast dune system is a spectacular meeting point of towering golden sands, rugged mountains, green pastures, and a winding stream that nourishes local nomadic families and their livestock.

After breakfast at the ger camp, begin your overland journey across the dramatic Gobi landscape. Upon arrival at the Khongor area, check in at Gobi Erdene Ger Camp and enjoy lunch before settling into your traditional accommodation.

In the late afternoon, set out to explore the dunes. The Khongor dunes rise up to 200–300 meters(656 ft- 984 ft.), and climbing to the top is both a challenge and a reward. As the sun begins to set, you’ll witness the desert transform, shifting from warm gold to deep amber as shadows stretch across the sand. This is one of the most breathtaking moments of any Mongolia itinerary, and a highlight for FAM participants evaluating signature guest experiences.

In the evening, visit a local nomadic family to learn about their traditions, daily routines, and the gentle rhythm of desert life. You’ll also have the option to rent their double‑humped Bactrian camels for a half‑hour sand‑dune safari, a quintessential Gobi experience that offers outstanding photo opportunities against the dramatic backdrop of the Khongor dunes. (Camel ride costs varies $10-15, not included in the trip cost)

Return to the camp for dinner and overnight, surrounded by the quiet, expansive beauty of the Gobi Desert.

Day 5: Bayanzag – The Flaming Cliffs & the Cradle of Dinosaurs

Today is one of the longer travel days of your Mongolia Travel Agent FAM Tour. After an early breakfast at the ger camp, prepare for a 5‑hour overland drive across the vast Gobi landscape (160km/100 miles). As there are no restaurants or food stops along the route, it is recommended that FAM participants eat well before departure and bring any preferred snacks or drinks for the journey.

Upon arrival in the Bayanzag region, check in at Gobi Mirage Ger Camp, have your lunch and take some time to rest and refresh before the afternoon excursion.

In the late afternoon, head out to explore the legendary Flaming Cliffs, the site that brought Mongolia worldwide recognition in paleontology. It was here in the 1920s that American explorer Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the first dinosaur eggs and complete skeletons ever found in Asia. The deep red sandstone formations glow brilliantly in the sunlight, especially striking in the late afternoon, creating the fiery appearance that inspired the name “Flaming Cliffs.”

Enjoy a short walk along the ridge, where your guide will share stories of historic expeditions and point out geological features. You may even spot small fragments of fossilized bone or petrified wood scattered across the ground.

Afterward, drive a short distance to the area that gives Bayanzag its name, meaning “rich in saxaul shrubs.” These hardy desert trees are essential to the Gobi ecosystem and offer insight into how nomadic families rely on natural resources for survival.

Return to the camp for dinner and overnight, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the desert.

Day 6: Return to Ulaanbaatar – Chinggis Khan Statue & Terelj National Park

Your Mongolia Travel Agent FAM Tour continues with an early start. As domestic flights from the Gobi typically depart in the morning, you will pick up a packed breakfast from the ger camp to enjoy en route or while waiting at the airport.

Transfer to the Dalanzadgad Airport (approx. 1 -1.30 hour) and board your flight back to Ulaanbaatar. Upon arrival, meet your bus driver, who will also have your stored luggage from the hotel ready for pickup, ensuring a smooth transition into the next phase of your journey.

From the airport, travel east toward one of Mongolia’s most iconic modern landmarks: the Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue Complex. Standing 40 meters tall, this gleaming stainless‑steel monument is the largest equestrian statue in the world. FAM participants can explore the museum, learn about Mongolia’s imperial history, and ascend to the viewing deck located on the horse’s head for panoramic views of the steppe.

Continue onward to Gorkhi‑Terelj National Park, known for its dramatic granite formations, forested valleys, and alpine scenery. With your local ranger and guide, explore the park’s valleys and hillsides in search of these remarkable animals. Along the way, you may also spot marmots, red deer, birds of prey, and other steppe wildlife.

This historic region sits in the Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its deep cultural significance and its role as a crossroads of nomadic civilizations.

Depart Hustai after breakfast and begin the scenic overland journey to Kharkhorin. The drive typically covers about 290km(181miles) and takes 4.5 to 5 hours, depending on road conditions. Along the way, enjoy sweeping views of open steppe, river valleys, and traditional herding communities, an excellent opportunity for FAM participants to observe rural life and understand the landscapes that shape Mongolia’s nomadic culture.

Upon arrival, check in at your ger camp and enjoy lunch before beginning your afternoon exploration.
