Tibet Travel Requirements

International travelers visiting the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) must fulfill specific visa and permit regulations set by Chinese civil and tourism authorities. Independent travel is strictly not permitted; all non-Chinese passport holders must travel on a pre-arranged, organized tour with a licensed agency, an authorized local guide, and private transport.

Entering Tibet via Mainland China

  • Chinese Tourist Visa (L-Visa): Obtain a standard individual Chinese Tourist Visa in advance from a Chinese Embassy, Consulate, or Visa Application Center in your home country (unless you qualify under China’s unilateral visa-exemption policies).

  • Tibet Travel Permit (TTP): Our local operations team in Lhasa processes your official Tibet Travel Permit and ships the original document via express courier to your hotel in your gateway city.

  • Crucial Stopover Requirement: You must hold the original physical permit to board domestic flights to Lhasa; electronic or digital copies are currently not accepted by airline security. You must plan a minimum 1-night stopover in your mainland gateway city (e.g., Chengdu, Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai) to ensure you safely receive the physical permit before boarding your flight to Tibet.

Entering Tibet from Nepal (Kathmandu)

Travelers entering Tibet directly from Kathmandu have two possible options depending on their visa arrangements:

  • Individual Chinese Visa + Electronic TTB Permit: If you already hold a valid individual Chinese Visa (or qualify for visa-free entry), our local Tibet office arranges your Tibet Travel Permit. A digital copy of the approved permit is emailed to you before departure. You must print high-resolution color copies to present alongside your passport and visa to board your flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa or cross the overland border at Kyirong.

  • Chinese Group Tourist Visa: If you do not hold an individual Chinese visa prior to arriving in Nepal, our Kathmandu partner submits your original passport along with the official TTB Visa Invitation Letter directly to the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. This process requires your physical passport and a processing window of 3 to 5 business days in Kathmandu.

Other Mandatory Travel Permits

Depending on your travel itinerary, additional regional permits are legally required:

  • Alien’s Travel Permit (PSB Permit): Required for travel outside Lhasa, including Gyantse, Shigatse, and Mount Everest Base Camp.

  • Military Area Entry Permit: Required for sensitive or border zones such as Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarovar, Ngari, and Nyingchi.

  • Border Defense Pass / Frontier Permit: Required for border regions near Nepal, India, and Bhutan, including the Kyirong border crossing and Everest Base Camp.

All of these secondary permits are arranged directly by our local operations team and Tibetan guide as part of your comprehensive tour package. You do not need to present them upon initial arrival in Tibet; your licensed guide keeps them on hand throughout the journey to clear all en-route checkpoints.

Required Documents for Processing Permits.

  • Clear Passport Copy: High-resolution color scan valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel completion date.

  • Chinese Visa Copy: Required if entering via mainland China or utilizing an existing individual visa via Nepal.

  • Detailed Final Itinerary: Bureau permits strictly authorize specific dates, travel routes, and designated overnight stops. Unscheduled detours or itinerary modifications cannot be made once permits are issued.

Application Timeline

Submit your passport and Chinese visa copy and fully paid/confirmed travel itinerary at least 30 to 45 days prior to your trip departure date. This ensures sufficient lead time for government bureau approvals, visa invitation issuances, and courier dispatch of original documents to your gateway hotel.
