Travel Warning and Safety Guidance Following Severe Flash Floods and Landslides in Nepal
KATHMANDU, NEPAL, Authorities and disaster management agencies have issued urgent travel advisories for international visitors, trekkers, and domestic travelers following catastrophic flash floods and landslides in north-central Nepal.
Recent glacial collapse and intense monsoon surges along the Langtang National Park and Trishuli/Bhote Koshi river corridors have caused widespread infrastructure destruction, road closures, and communication outages across multiple districts. All travelers currently in Nepal or planning to visit the affected regions are urged to review their itineraries immediately and prioritize personal safety.
Key Affected Areas & Route Closures
Rasuwa District & Langtang Corridor: Severe damage across Syabrubesi, Timure, Rasuwagadhi, and border crossing access points. All travel and trekking in Rasuwa is strictly discouraged until further notice.
Neighboring Mountain & Foothill Districts: Heightened alert, severe debris flow, and structural damages reported in Nuwakot, Dhading, and parts of the Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.
Highways & Overland Transit: Critical transport corridors, including segments of the Prithvi Highway, the Galchhi–Nuwakot–Rasuwa–Syabrubesi corridor, and the Mugling–Narayangadh highway, face ongoing disruptions, temporary closures, and landslide hazards.
Cross-Border Routes: Overland entry through the Rasuwagadhi/Gyirong Port (Tibet) border crossing remains closed.
Essential Safety Advice for Travelers
Defer Non-Essential Travel to Affected Regions: Postpone planned treks, tours, and road travel into Rasuwa, Langtang, and landslide-prone valleys.
Stay Away from Waterways: Avoid riverbanks, unstable low-lying river corridors, and damaged bridges. Never attempt to walk, drive, or cross through active floodwaters or debris paths.
Verify Flight & Route Conditions: Confirm domestic flight statuses (e.g., flights to mountain airfields) and overland highway conditions with licensed tour operators or airlines prior to departure.
Establish Communication: If you are in or near an affected area, immediately notify family members, tour operators, registered guides, and your country’s local embassy of your safety status. If cellular voice networks are congested or down, use SMS, messaging apps, or email.
Follow Official Instructions: Adhere strictly to evacuation orders and guidance from the Nepal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) and local security personnel.
