Mongolia Entry Requirements
Entering Mongolia requires meeting specific passport validity standards, visa regulations, and customs protocols. While the Mongolian government has streamlined entry significantly for international travelers, preparation ensures a smooth arrival at air and land borders.
Passport Validity
6-Month Rule: Your physical passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned date of entry into Mongolia.
Blank Pages: Ensure you have at least two blank visa/entry stamp pages available for border control inspection.
Visa Regulations & Exemption Policies
Entry rules vary depending on your citizenship:
Visa-Exempt Nationalities: Citizens of dozens of countries enjoy visa-free entry for tourism for stays ranging from 14 to 90 days:
Up to 90 Days: United States, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macau, and others.
Up to 30 Days: Most European Union member states, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Singapore, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and select Latin American nations.
Up to 14 Days: Hong Kong, Philippines (21 days), and others.
Official Mongolian eVisa (K-Visa): If your nationality is not on the visa-exemption list, eligible travelers can apply for an electronic tourist visa (eVisa / K-Type) prior to travel through the official government portal (evisa.mn):
Processing Time: Typically 3 business days.
Validity: Valid for single entry within 150 days of issuance, permitting stays of up to 30 days.
Required Uploads: Digital passport scan, passport-style photo, and accommodation/itinerary confirmation.
Consular Visa: Travelers from countries ineligible for the eVisa or those seeking long-term, multi-entry, or work/business stays must apply directly through a Mongolian Embassy or Consulate.
Foreigner Registration (For Stays Over 30 Days)
If you plan to stay in Mongolia for more than 30 consecutive days, you must register with the Mongolia Immigration Agency within your first 7 business days in the country.
Travelers staying under 30 days on standard visa-exempt or 30-day tourist visas are exempt from this registration requirement. If staying at standard hotels or tourist ger camps, the properties handle routine guest registry logging automatically.
Customs & Border Declarations
Currency Reporting: Cash, traveler’s checks, or securities totaling $10,000 USD or equivalent in foreign or local currency must be declared upon arrival and departure.
Drones: Flying a recreational drone in Mongolia requires caution. While bringing a small recreational drone is generally permitted, flying near government complexes, military zones, airports, border zones, and within designated National Park historical ruins is strictly restricted without prior authorization.
Antiques & Cultural Relics: Mongolia enforces strict penalties against the export of historical artifacts, dinosaur fossils, paleontological specimens, antique religious art, or uncertified traditional antiques. Always keep official purchase receipts and export permits provided by certified antique shops in Ulaanbaatar.
Health & Immunization Requirements
There are no mandatory vaccination certificates (such as Yellow Fever or COVID-19) required for general entry.
Recommended routine travel vaccinations include Tetanus, Hepatitis A, and Typhoid.
